Job description

An award-winning community drug and alcohol charity is recruiting a Substance Misuse Nurse to join its specialist Addictions and Detoxification Clinic in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. This is an excellent opportunity for a Registered General Nurse (RGN) or Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN) with an interest in substance misuse, addictions, recovery and rehabilitation, offering a salary of up to £43,384 per annum on a 12 month contract.

This Substance Misuse Nurse role is Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm, with no nights or weekends, based in a structured detox and rehabilitation clinic. You will provide front-line clinical nursing care to people accessing drug and alcohol recovery services, supporting them through assessment, detoxification and rehabilitation pathways.

The Role – Substance Misuse Nurse

As a Substance Misuse Nurse, your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering clinical care within a drug and alcohol detoxification service
  • Carrying out physical health assessments and supporting recovery planning
  • Providing BBV screening, complete ECGs, administer vaccinations
  • Supporting alcohol detox and opiate detoxification programmes
  • Delivering health promotion, harm reduction and rehabilitation support
  • Working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary addictions team
Experience & Skills (Desirable but Not Essential)
  • Drug and alcohol detoxification
  • Addiction nursing or substance misuse services
  • Vaccinations and BBV screening
  • ECGs and physical health monitoring
  • Titration and medication management
  • Rehabilitation or recovery-focused nursing
About You – RGN / RMN

The ideal Substance Misuse Nurse will be:

  • A qualified RGN or RMN with a current NMC registration
  • Experienced in, or strongly motivated towards, addictions and substance misuse nursing
  • Able to demonstrate transferable skills from areas such as A&E, mental health, community nursing, prison healthcare, detox or acute services
  • Compassionate, non-judgemental and recovery-focused

Previous addictions experience is not essential. Nurses with backgrounds in A&E, prison nursing, mental health, acute care or community nursing are strongly encouraged to apply, provided they can demonstrate a clear interest in drug and alcohol recovery services.
