Job description
About us

The King's community is dedicated to the service of society. King's Strategic Vision 2029 sets out our vision for the future, shaped around five priority areas: educate to inspire and improve; research to inform and innovate; serve to shape and transform; a civic university at the heart of London; and an international community that services the world. Our ambitious Education Strategy sets out the actions that we must take to transform how we teach, how and where our students learn and how we support them during their time with us.

The Student Transition and Outcomes Department works to address the sector-wide and institutional factors and barriers that contribute to lower rates of attainment, continuation and progression for students at King's. We work collaboratively across the King's community to provide an inclusive student experience, with a focus on traditionally underrepresented student groups.

We are part of the Students & Education Directorate, a collection of wide-ranging professional services in place to support King's students and their education. As a directorate we manage the student lifecycle from application to graduation and beyond, to ensure a coherent and seamless student experience and effective administrative processes, working closely with King's faculties to do so.

About the role

Working in close collaboration with colleagues across central services, faculties and external networks, as well as with our student body, the Student Transition Manager (Priority Groups) oversees the institutional support for care‑experienced, estranged students, forced migrant and young carer students. The Student Transition Manager (Priority Groups) owns key processes designed to support the student transition experience in, through and out of King's for these groups, and will set clear standards for how the University delivers its broader support for them, e.g. through staff training.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about the experience of our most underrepresented student groups and who wishes to utilise their skills and expertise to drive improvements across the student lifecycle.

We encourage applications from candidates who have experience from both within and outside of the Higher Education sector where they can demonstrate the skills needed to succeed in this role.

This is a full‑time post (35 hours per week) and you will be offered an indefinite contract. We support flexible working arrangements, and work in a hybrid way, with a current minimum requirement to be on campus every Thursday.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria
  1. Relevant work experience and/or education: We think a wide range of different work and educational experiences could support you to be successful in this role. Relevant work experience might include work in student support services or leading projects or support programmes for underrepresented groups. Relevant educational experiences might include higher education in a related discipline, professional qualifications, or other training.
  2. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and distribute information clearly.
  3. Take responsibility for your own learning and development, including continuous engagement with developments related to Priority Group students.
  4. Sound knowledge of the sensitive nature of personal data, and the importance of compliance with Data Protection Legislation.
  5. Ability to build and engage with internal and external networks that support your role (e.g. working groups, professional networks, other HE institutions).
  6. Ability to manage the workload of yourself and others in a fast‑changing environment and meet challenging deadlines.
  7. Ability to identify operational areas of improvement, propose and implement solutions, in co‑ordination with others.
  8. Ability to analyse and interpret data to support decision making, or for inclusion in reports.
Desirable criteria
  1. An understanding of the Higher Education experience of students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds, particularly care‑experienced, estranged, forced migrants and/or young carer students.
  2. Experience of developing training and resources to support staff development.
  3. Experience of coordinating cross‑institutional work (e.g. charter mark applications, Access & Participation Plans).
  4. Understanding of need for confidentiality and when and how to escalate / signpost sensitive cases.
