Job summary

Amey Consulting in the West Midlands seeks a Structures Engineer to support and lead a design team on diverse structures schemes. Hybrid working with shared Birmingham office space is offered, and you will mentor junior engineers while delivering projects end-to-end.

You will bring developed experience in structures, produce technically sound deliverables, and demonstrate knowledge of CDM, risk assessment, and interface management. Chartered status is desirable.

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Structures Engineerto join our Consulting Structures Team in the West Midlands. This is a hybrid role and with shared office space in our Birminghamoffice, we invite applications from across the region.

Amey Consulting has been appointed as the design partner for two regions of National Highways' 6-year Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF), the largest and most comprehensive renewals programme ever launched by the government-owned company. The Midlands Region SDF includes over 2,000 large bridges and culverts.

Since 2020 we’ve been managing three major structures (M5 Avonmouth Bridge, the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge and the M48 Severn Bridge) under a 15-year contract worth £16 million per annum, as well as awarded in 2023 the 4th generation of the Midlands Highway Alliance Plus framework.

These long-term contracts provide excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional design staff at all stages of their careers to be involved in some of the most exciting and challenging engineering projects.

The role

As a Structures Engineer, you will provide effective support and assistance to your Design Team Leader on a variety of Structures schemes whilst taking the lead on projects and mentoring junior engineers and technicians. Responsibilities include:

• Leading a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions.
• Taking ownership and leading projects from start to finish, from preparing the quotation all the way to handover.
• Preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the criteria of quality, cost and programme.
• Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions.
• Contributing to the professional development of junior staff and acting as a Delegated Engineer.
• Liaising with Client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries.
• Managing a small, locally based, single-discipline technical team and taking responsibility for the delivery of their workload.
• Contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work-winning function.
• Drive effective Health and Safety practices within the team.

What you will bring to us:

• Developed experience and expertise within the Structures field, probably gained in an Assistant Engineer role or equivalent.
• An ability to produceor oversee the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and the Client’s requirements.
• Takes ownership for the preparation and checking of deliverables and can check deliverables to a reasonable standard.
• Very good working knowledge of relevant software and similar analytical tools (e.g LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
• Demonstrates good commercial awareness.
• Has a good understanding of CDM and risk assessment.
• Substantially experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied.
• Demonstrates a good understanding of interface management, and ensures own deliverables align with deliverables produced by other disciplines.
• Working towards Incorporated or Chartered status with the ICE or IstructE. or an equivalent professional licence gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
