We are seeking an experienced Structural Engineer looking to expand their expertise into the field of construction underwriting. This unique hybrid role combines advanced technical engineering knowledge with the ability to evaluate and advise on construction project risk management. You will contribute directly to pricing strategy, underwriting decisions, and the successful delivery of major construction projects.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in structural engineering, excellent communication skills, and a keen interest in applying engineering experience to the insurance and underwriting sector.
Carry out comprehensive reviews of structural project documentation from design teams, contractors, and subcontractors, including:
Structural engineering and architectural drawings
Construction Method Statements (e.g., underpinning, piling, basement construction)
Geotechnical Reports and Basement Impact Assessments
Temporary Works proposals and other complex construction documentation
Develop a full understanding of the project scope and risks
Provide concise technical summaries for the underwriting team
Advise on construction complexities, potential risks, and project feasibility
Liaise with policyholder design and contractor teams to clarify technical details
Produce detailed reports and risk profiles to inform underwriting and pricing decisions
Conduct site inspections during key stages of construction and report findings
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Structural Engineering or a related discipline
Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent professional status preferred
Minimum 15 years of structural engineering experience
Proven background in complex building remodelling and basement construction
Strong understanding of construction methods, geotechnical principles, and temporary works design
Proficiency in interpreting engineering drawings, technical reports, and risk documentation
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly
Analytical and detail-oriented mindset, with proven risk assessment skills
Interest in learning and applying underwriting principles
Competence in relevant engineering software and reporting tools
Involvement in high-value private client construction projects across the UK and Ireland (up to £250m)
