Job summary

Mott MacDonald is seeking a Lighting/Electrical specialist to contribute to the Street Lighting team across UK projects. You will prepare designs, perform site surveys, and collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to deliver safe, efficient lighting solutions.

The role offers hybrid working, with opportunities to develop specialist lighting expertise and progress within a global engineering consultancy.

Qualifications

  • Must have a self-driven work style and deliver quality outputs under supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with colleagues, clients, and contractors.
  • Familiarity with lighting design software (Lighting Reality).
  • Experience with AutoCAD in design development and documentation.
  • Knowledge of UK standards: DMRB, MCHDW, BS5489, BS EN 13201, BS7671, ILP guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare high-quality lighting/electrical designs, drawings, specs, and contract docs.
  • Undertake site surveys for design development and night-time lighting assessments.
  • Build strong client relationships and contribute to project outcomes.
  • Coordinate designs with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure integrated solutions.

About The Business Unit

We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and advising on related issues - such as revenue, procurement, and environmental legislation - to delivering the completed infrastructure and helping maintain it. Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy.

Our Street Lighting team work on nationally significant transport and infrastructure projects including Lower Thames Crossing, A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet and East West Rail. By joining the team, you will have the opportunity to learn from recognised technical experts in lighting design and develop your skills across lighting, electrical design and environmental assessment. You will be part of a collaborative and growing team with opportunities for long-term career progression.

Key responsibilities and duties may include:
  • Prepare and contribute to high-quality lighting and electrical designs, drawings, specifications, and contract documentation to support project delivery.
  • Undertake site surveys to inform design development and nighttime lighting assessments.
  • Develop and maintain strong technical credibility and trusted relationships with clients, contributing to successful project outcomes within collaborative and partnering environments.
  • Work closely with multi-disciplinary engineering and technical teams, ensuring effective coordination and integration of design solutions.
Candidate Specification:
Essential
  • Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to manage workload effectively and deliver high-quality outputs with supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, clients, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Conversant with lighting design software, particularly Lighting Reality
  • Experience or practical working knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Working knowledge of: National Highways DMRB and MCHDW standards, BS5489, BS EN 13201, BS7671 and ILP Technical Reports and guidance documents
Desirable
  • Relevant engineering or electrical qualification (minimum certificate or diploma level)
  • Completed or working towards the Institution of Lighting Professionals Exterior Lighting Diploma
  • Registered with the Engineering Council as EngTech and Affiliate Member of the ILP
