Job summary

Sandwell Council is seeking a Planning Officer to manage a varied caseload of predominantly householder and minor commercial schemes within the Development Management Team. You will interpret permitted development rules and interact with agencies and internal departments to determine planning applications and enforcement matters.

The role requires knowledge of planning law, strong communication and negotiation skills, and a willingness to travel for site visits and committee meetings.

Qualifications

• Ability to work effectively as part of a team while also demonstrating initiative and self-motivation.
• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate tactfully and diplomatically in challenging situations.
• Proven ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities and meet demanding deadlines.
• Comprehensive knowledge of planning law and practice.
• Full MRTPI membership or willingness to work towards it.

Responsibilities

• Process a wide range of planning applications and make recommendations on appropriate actions.
• Prepare detailed reports on planning proposals and draft decision notices.
• Prepare and submit appeal questionnaires and statements, representing the Council's position where required.
• Provide evidence at public inquiries, appeal hearings and other planning proceedings.
• Advise stakeholders throughout all stages of the development management process.
• Investigate breaches of planning control and undertake enforcement activities.
