Job Title: STEM Technician
Location: South-East London
Purpose of the Role
To support the delivery of high-quality STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education by preparing, maintaining, and managing practical resources and equipment. The technician plays a key role in ensuring safe, effective, and engaging practical lessons.
Key Responsibilities
- Preparation & Support:
- Prepare and set up equipment and materials for practical lessons in science, technology, and engineering.
- Assist teaching staff during practical sessions and demonstrations.
- Trial and develop new experiments and demonstrations.
- Maintenance & Safety:
- Clean, maintain, and store laboratory and workshop equipment safely.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including COSHH and risk assessments.
- Monitor and maintain stock levels of consumables and order replacements as needed.
- Technical Duties:
- Construct and modify apparatus and teaching aids.
- Calibrate and test equipment to ensure functionality.
- Maintain records of equipment, chemicals, and safety checks.
- Administrative Support:
- Maintain inventories and update safety documentation.
- Support with administrative tasks such as preparing worksheets or digital resources.
- Collaboration:
- Liaise with teaching staff to understand curriculum needs.
- Work as part of a team of technicians or independently, depending on the size of the department.
Desirable Skills & Qualifications
- GCSEs (A*-C) or equivalent in English, Maths, and Science (minimum).
- A-levels, BTEC, HNC/HND, or degree in a STEM subject (preferred).
- Experience in a laboratory, workshop, or technical environment.
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures in educational settings.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
