Job Description:

Staff Engineer – Software Development, System Architecture & Distributed Systems

Hybrid (London – 3 Days In-Office) | Up to £150,000 + Bonus + Benefits

Are you ready to play a key role in scaling one of the UK’s most exciting FinTechs?

Our client is a fast-growing, fintech on a mission to redefine how people interact with their finances. With fresh investment, strategic partnerships, and an ambitious product roadmap, they're entering a transformative phase and they’re seeking 2 Staff Software Engineers to help shape the future of their platform (one entry level Staff Engineer, one experienced Staff Engineer).

This is a high-impact, hands-on role offering significant technical ownership across the platform. You’ll drive architectural strategy, champion engineering excellence, and provide deep technical excellence across multiple teams. While not a people management position, you’ll act as a key technical influencer and collaborator, guiding system evolution at scale during a period of rapid growth.

What You’ll Do

  • Architect for Scale: Design and evolve distributed, event-driven systems that are robust, secure, and scalable ready to meet the demands of a growing user base and a regulated environment.
  • Drive Technical Excellence: Set and maintain high standards for code quality, testing, system performance, and engineering practices.
  • Influence Without Authority: Provide technical direction across teams, help navigate complexity, and drive alignment on architectural decisions.
  • Mentor and Support: Partner with engineering managers to mentor developers, foster a culture of ownership, and elevate the overall technical bar.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work closely with Product, Design, and Operations to build pragmatic, customer-focused solutions.
  • Tackle Technical Debt: Identify architectural bottlenecks and drive long-term improvements to system design and developer experience.
  • Shape Engineering Strategy: Contribute to the long-term technical roadmap, platform evolution, and improvements in tooling, CI/CD, and observability.

What You’ll Bring

  • Proven experience leading large-scale, complex technical initiatives in high-velocity production environments.
  • At least 3 years in a Staff Engineer (or equivalent) role within a fast-moving, product-led organisation and product engineering mind set.
  • Deep expertise in system architecture, distributed systems, cloud-native infrastructure (AWS or GCP), and event-driven design.
  • Strong programming ability in one or more languages (e.g. TypeScript, Node.js, Python, Go, Java).
  • Experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, performance tuning, and monitoring tools.
  • Solid database knowledge (SQL & NoSQL) and the judgment to choose the right tool for the job.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills; comfortable working through ambiguity and influencing at all levels.
  • A mindset focused on long-term sustainability and strategic technical thinking.

Bonus Points For

  • Fintech or regulated environment experience, particularly investment platforms.
  • Familiarity with modern observability stacks and incident response processes.
  • Experience with security-first architecture and data protection best practices.

Why Join?

  • Well-Backed & Ambitious: Backed by a globally recognised financial group with significant investment from a household FS name and a bold growth plan.
  • Real Technical Impact: Your work will shape the next-gen investment platform used by thousands daily.
  • Engineering-Led Culture: High trust, low ego, and deep respect for technical voices.
  • Flexible & Modern Ways of Working: Hybrid setup (2–3 days remote), with modern offices in London or Budapest.
  • Competitive Compensation: Up to £150,000 base + annual bonus + excellent benefits, including private healthcare, life insurance, enhanced pension, generous L&D budget, and more.
