Job description

Founded in 2017, Wayve is the leading developer of Embodied AI technology. Our advanced AI software and foundation models enable vehicles to perceive, understand, and navigate any complex environment, enhancing the usability and safety of automated driving systems.

Our vision is to create autonomy that propels the world forward. Our intelligent, mapless, and hardware-agnostic AI products are designed for automakers, accelerating the transition from assisted to automated driving.

In our fast-paced environment big problems ignite us—we embrace uncertainty, leaning into complex challenges to unlock groundbreaking solutions. We aim high and stay humble in our pursuit of excellence, constantly learning and evolving as we pave the way for a smarter, safer future.

At Wayve, your contributions matter. We value diversity, embrace new perspectives, and foster an inclusive work environment; we back each other to deliver impact.

Make Wayve the experience that defines your career!

The role

Wayve is seeking a Staff Robotics Engineer, 3D Sensing to lead the technical development of our LiDAR and cross-sensor 3D sensing capabilities. You will own the systems used to calibrate, synchronise and align LiDARs with cameras and other vehicle sensors, enabling accurate and reliable 3D data for perception, reconstruction and ground-truth generation.

This is a senior individual-contributor role with responsibility for shaping the architecture and technical roadmap for 3D sensing, while remaining deeply involved in algorithm development, implementation, evaluation and deployment. You will solve challenging problems arising from real sensor systems—including imperfect time synchronisation, rolling-shutter cameras and LiDAR sweep patterns—and develop robust methods that operate across diverse vehicles, environments and operating conditions. You will collaborate broadly across Wayve and provide technical leadership and mentorship across the 3D sensing stack.

Key responsibilities:

  • Define and evolve the technical architecture and roadmap for Wayve’s LiDAR and cross-sensor 3D sensing capabilities, aligned with product and vehicle-programme requirements.
  • Lead the development of target-based and targetless LiDAR calibration and registration methods, including LiDAR-to-camera alignment using geometric and learned approaches.
  • Develop robust temporal alignment and motion compensation methods using techniques such as LiDAR odometry, nonlinear least-squares optimisation and factor graphs.
  • Establish evaluation methodologies and productionise reliable, scalable 3D sensing systems that operate across diverse vehicles, environments and sensor configurations.
  • Work with engineering and research teams to deliver end-to-end 3D sensing capabilities, while providing technical leadership and mentorship to other engineers.
About you

In order to set you up for success as a Staff Robotics Engineer, 3D Sensing at Wayve, we’re looking for the following skills and experience:

Essential

  • Significant experience developing robotics or autonomous-driving systems involving LiDAR, cameras and 3D sensor data.
  • Strong experience with target-based or targetless sensor calibration and registration, including LiDAR-to-camera alignment.
  • Strong understanding of 3D geometry, state estimation and optimisation techniques, including nonlinear least-squares methods or factor graphs.
  • Experience accounting for sensor timing and motion effects, such as time synchronisation, LiDAR sweep distortion, rolling-shutter cameras and motion compensation.
  • Strong software-engineering skills in C++ and/or Python, with experience taking robotics algorithms from prototype through evaluation and production deployment.
  • Experience defining evaluation methodologies, datasets and metrics for assessing calibration, registration and 3D sensing quality across real-world conditions.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, including setting technical direction, solving ambiguous cross-functional problems and mentoring other engineers.

Desirable

  • Experience with LiDAR odometry, SLAM or mapping systems, including LiDAR motion compensation and deskewing.
  • Experience with metric-depth foundation models and their application to calibration, registration or 3D reconstruction.
  • Familiarity with learned feature correspondences, cross-modal registration, Gaussian splatting or other emerging 3D representations.
  • Experience handling dynamic scenes using object detection, motion segmentation or tracking methods.
  • Practical experience with optimisation libraries such as GTSAM, Ceres Solver or g2o.
