Ward Overview

Ward 7B is a 28‑bedded renal transplant (14 beds) and nephrology (14 beds) ward caring for patients mainly with acute and chronic renal failure. This includes haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis modalities.

Role Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic staff nurse to join our team. The postholder will be responsible and accountable for the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of nursing care. The nurse will work as a member of the multi‑disciplinary team and undertake delegated tasks from the ward sister/charge nurse.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for all patients and carers.
  • Determine nursing priorities and plan patient care; inform the nurse in charge of changes in circumstances that may affect patient care.
  • Maintain nursing records in accordance with the NMC and Trust guidelines.
  • Contribute to the development of 'Essence of Care' and clinical benchmarking within the unit.
  • Ensure due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients.
  • Provide information and support to patients/carers and ensure everyone involved is aware of changes in the patient’s condition.
  • Assist in the safe custody, checking and administration of drugs.
  • Develop clinical knowledge and skills to care for acutely ill patients admitted via both planned and unplanned routes.
  • Undertake expanded practice under supervision to optimise patient care in line with ward/department and Trust policies.
  • Involve patients and carers in the planning and delivery of care.
  • Ensure effective lines of communication within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Ensure equipment is checked and maintained in safe working order.
  • Manage allocated workload and provide supervision of less experienced staff.
  • Promote safe and efficient use of all resources.
  • Report incidents, accidents and complaints to the unit manager and complete Trust incident forms in accordance with risk management policies.
  • Ensure compliance with Trust policies and procedures and maintain own clinical governance standards.
  • Provide leadership in the monitoring of standards of care.
  • Act as shift coordinator in rotation with other nurses in the team.

  • Haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis experience preferable but not essential; training packages available.
  • Commitment to the NMC’s Code of Professional Conduct.
