Palliative Care Staff Nurse – Band 5

Woking & Sam Beare Hospice are pleased to announce the following position:

Woking and Sam Beare Hospice In Patient Unit is looking for a passionate, dynamic and enthusiastic Band 5 Registered Nurse to join our incredible team. Here at the hospice, we pride ourselves on giving exceptionally high standards of care to patients and their families through some of the most challenging times of their lives. In our IPU, in their own homes and in our Wellbeing Centre. Our charity‑based service specialises in palliative and end‑of‑life care for patients with complex life‑limiting illnesses who live in the North‑West Surrey area.

We have fantastic staff‑to‑patient ratios that leave our patients and families feeling like they are always a priority. Our environment is clean, warm and homely, ensuring all that come through our services feel safe and comfortable.

We focus on education and development. Our education team supports excellent training sessions taught by our in‑house experts. Staff are encouraged and supported to increase their professional skills through courses and university modules.

Part‑time and full‑time positions are considered (applications for nights only will be considered and discussed at interview).

Responsibilities

  • Provide a high standard of individualised, patient‑centred care for patients with a life‑limiting illness and support relatives and carers on the Inpatient Unit.
  • Assist in the management and organisation of the nursing service, including teaching junior staff and students.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate evidence‑based individualised nursing care.
  • Support complex patients with their medical, social and psychological needs.
  • Lead, motivate and support junior members of the team.
  • Engage in the development of the ward and focus on improving care and ensuring best practice at all times.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
  • Current NMC registration.
  • RN educated to Diploma or Degree level.
  • Relevant clinical experience and self‑directed teamwork.
  • Evidence of recent professional updating and relevant personal development.
  • UK professional registration.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
  • Palliative care qualification.
  • Mentorship qualification.
  • Placement or post‑qualification experience in a palliative care setting.
  • Systemic IT skills and evidence of introducing change and innovation into nursing practice.

  • Demonstrate a high standard of patient care and operate in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct and Practice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to work with others to produce workable solutions.
  • Ability to balance conflicting priorities and manage a challenging workload in a calm and professional manner.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to manage demanding and sensitive situations.
  • Ability to teach and support junior members of the team.
