Job summary

A paediatric hospital in Sheffield is looking for Band 5 Staff Nurses to join its nursing teams across various wards and departments. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to rotate through 2 to 3 areas within the first 18 months. Qualified and newly qualified paediatric nurses are encouraged to apply, as the role offers support through a comprehensive development program. There are vacancies within the Medicine, Surgery & Critical Care groups for Band 5 staff nurses to join our nursing teams in various wards and departments across the Trust.

This includes Ward 1 (General surgical), Ward 2 (Orthopaedics and Burns), Ward 3 and Ward 4 (General Medical), Ward 5 (Neurosciences), Ward 6 (Haem/Onc), ED, PCCU, NSU, 0-19, Theatre Admissions Unit (TAU) and PACU.

Both qualified and newly qualified staff will be expected to start in 2026.

Sheffield Children’s is a specialised Paediatric Hospital and a Centre of Excellence with our services amongst the best in the country. We have a range of vacancies with contract options to include permanent positions with full and part time hours. Please specify your contract option (i.e. full time / part time) on the application form if possible.

Successful candidates will join our rotational programme. This involves rotation to 2/3 different areas within the first 18 months.

Applicants must be Paediatric nurses and MUST hold RSCN/ RN Child registration with NMC or due to have in 2026.

You should have good communication skills and a commitment towards personal and professional development. Full orientation and support will be given to successful candidates' and we have an outstanding Band 5 development programme.

Main duties of the job

Your main duties will be to:

  • Co-ordinate and provide skilled nursing to patients.
  • Contribute to the continuing development of nursing, including the supervision of junior nurses and support staff.
  • Act as an advocate for patients.
  • To plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for an allocated patient group.
  • To assist the team in managing and developing the Ward/Department
  • To work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

The Trust wards and departments contain the following areas:

  • Ward 1, ENT, renal, gastrointestinal and max fax surgery.
  • Ward 2 and Burns, orthopaedic, limb reconstruction, spinal, Burns and plastic surgery
  • Ward 3, caring for children from 0-16yrs, both with a wide spectrum of acute and chronic medical conditions and also CWAM patients.
  • , caring for children from 0-16yrs a wide spectrum of acute and chronic medical conditions
  • Ward 5b caring for neurosurgical and neuro-medical patients requiring specialised care
  • Ward6b>, Haematology/Oncology patients and Bone Marrow Transplant regional centre.
  • - is a major trauma unit, with an acute assessment attached. Staff within ED work between ED and AAU as part of their role.
  • PCCU, caring for children requiring either ICU or HDU level care.
  • NSU, caring for neonatal surgical patients
