Job summary

bp is seeking an exceptional Expert Data Scientist to serve as a technical leader and architect of machine learning systems. This role is the highest IC tier, shaping architectural direction and driving high-impact ML products across research and enterprise deployment.

You will mentor senior engineers, influence multiple teams, and drive collaboration across business and R&D domains. The position offers hybrid working arrangements and opportunities within a world-class energy technology

Qualifications

• MSc, PhD in a quantitative field or equivalent experience.
• Hands-on experience designing, deploying, and scaling complex ML systems in production.
• Deep expertise in ML algorithms, modeling, optimisation, and scientific computing.
• Strong software engineering, distributed systems, and API design knowledge.
• Advanced programming in Python, Go, Java, or C++.
• Advanced SQL knowledge and experience with MLOps and model lifecycle management.
• Experience with large-scale data systems and distributed computing (e.g. Spark, Hadoop).
• Ability to influence large organisations through technical excellence.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership in designing production-grade ML systems and platforms.
• Own end-to-end delivery of complex ML solutions from problem framing to deployment.
• Develop and validate novel ML algorithms and models for scalable production products.
• Bridge research and enterprise deployment to deliver maintainable solutions with measurable value.
• Drive ML engineering standards, CI/CD, testing, observability, and reliability guidelines.
• Mentor engineers and data scientists to raise technical benchmarks across teams.
• Partner with business customers to shape ML strategy and opportunities.
