Job description

We wish to appoint a Clinical Fellow in Renal Medicine for 6 months. There is a possibility that this post may be extended. The post is neither Royal College nor Postgraduate approved for training, but is educationally sound and well supported, with excellent opportunities for gaining clinical experience in Renal Medicine. Full Registration with the GMC is essential. The post is based at Southmead Hospital. The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential. Some prior experience in renal medicine is also required.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties will rotate through periods of inpatient ward duties, daytime emergency duties as the on‑call bleepholder, outpatient clinics (including transplantation, dialysis, general and sub‑specialty nephrology and satellite clinics) and procedures. Training and experience will be gained in all aspects of renal medicine commensurate with a large renal unit providing tertiary level care. There is currently a complex hybrid on‑call rota with 12 slots covering renal medicine only. There are occasional blocks of resident night shifts.

We are a flexible team that work together to ensure the patients receive the best quality of care possible. It is a unit with 19 Consultant Nephrologists, 6 transplant surgeons, 6 specialist renal trainees, 2 academic clinical fellows, 2 academic clinical lecturers, 3 IMT stage 1 medicine trainees, 3 Foundation year 2 trainees and 2 foundation year 1 trainees and 3‑4 locally employed clinical fellows working at renal registrars.

Qualifications and Registration
Essential
  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • Maintain Full registration with the GMC.
  • Passed all stages of MRCP
Desirable
  • Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD or MSc).
  • ALS Certification
Training and Experience
Essential
  • Completed pre‑registration year (or equivalent outside of the UK)
  • Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
  • Completed IMT stage 1 training (or equivalent)
  • Previous experience working in renal medicine
Desirable
  • Good Academic Record, evidence of recent CPD and Evidence of Training Progression
Management Audit / QI
Essential
  • An understanding of the principles of clinical audit or Quality Improvement (QI)
Desirable
  • Experience in audit / QI project and written up
  • Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management.
Research, Teaching, Publications
Essential
  • Evidence of teaching experience
  • Interest in research
Desirable
  • Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • Proven track record in research.
