Section 1 – Essential Criteria
The following criteria will be measured at shortlisting and may be further explored during interview/selection.
- Hold a current and valid Pool Lifeguard Qualification.
- Have at least 2 years paid experience working as a Pool Lifeguard.
- Experience administering first aid.
- Have a strong swimming ability.
- Knowledge of health and safety at work, especially in a swimming pool setting.
- Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures.
- Ability to carry out regular checks of changing facilities for safety, cleanliness and hygiene.
- Skill in pool surveillance and rescue techniques.
- Commitment to team‑working and respect for others.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently and use initiative.
- Open, honest and confident personality.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to problem‑solve and manage own time effectively.
- Understanding of how SEN students and their staff teams may use the pool.
- Commitment to ensuring an enjoyable and safe experience for all pool users.
Section 2 – Essential Criteria (Interview)
- Skill and expertise in the application of pool surveillance and rescue techniques.
- Understanding of importance of ensuring equipment is clean, organised and available.
- Support pupils to prepare for swimming lessons promoting independence in self‑help skills.
- Support the swimming teacher and pupils during lessons; follow teacher directions.
- Working knowledge of health and safety procedures in a pool environment.
- Assisting with emergency evacuation of the swimming pool (e.g., in case of fire).
Section 3 – Desirable Criteria
- Hold a recognised qualification as a swimming instructor.
- Hold a First Aid qualification.
- Training/experience in use of a defibrillator.
- Willingness to undertake training and development when required.
Disclosures and Other Requirements
- Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background required for regulated activity.
- Candidate expected to cover the cost of the certificate at pre‑employment stage.

Other Duties
- Set up equipment in sports hall for classes (boccia, badminton, etc.).
- Assist with PE classes.
- Ensure PE storage areas are clean and tidy.
- Set up equipment for organised school events (Sports Day, etc.).
