This is a new and exciting part time role of 34 hours per week, working across the Head and Neck and Voice SLT teams. It is a great opportunity to develop your skills in these areas as a newly qualified practitioner.

You will provide a high quality, evidence-based speech and language therapy assessment, treatment and rehabilitation to adults presenting with communication, voice and swallowing difficulties associated with both voice and head and neck cancer and its treatment. You will be supported by experienced specialist SLTs and undertake a structured programme of supervision and professional development.

Key Duties:

Working as an autonomous practitioner, to provide a high standard of patient focused care through specialised assessment.
To plan and deliver a high-quality service to patients working in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary teams for voice and head and neck cancer.
To offer skills and expertise to in-patients and out-patients.
To contribute to the SLT Clinical Governance agenda to further improve the quality of the service.
Plan and prioritise own caseload with support from senior clinicians.
Manage a caseload of patients with varying diagnosis and complex needs, using evidence based client centred principles.
Participate in the planning, development and evaluation of clinical practice & service development within area.
Contribute to maintenance and development of the SLT service.
Participate in information management to ensure high quality data which is recorded, evaluated & reported in a timely manner.
To be involved in the education and training of volunteers, students and other staff.
To work as an effective and flexible member of the team focused on improving the care of our patients and contributing to best practise models of care.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide a high-quality service to patients at Worcester Acute Hospitals NHS Trust as an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team. This includes providing treatment plans with client centred goals.
To be professionally, legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work and activities.
To work as an integral part of the voice and head and neck cancer multi-disciplinary teams, contributing to team discussions and influencing decisions about patient care programmes, taking on the role of care coordinator where appropriate.
To develop and carry out robust treatment and management plans individually or in a group setting, evaluating the outcomes as appropriate.
Follow appropriate discharge criteria, discussing and agreeing this with the MDT and disseminating information to ensure a smooth transfer to other services on discharge from Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
To provide advice, teaching and training to other members of the MDT regarding the SLT of patients with communication and swallowing disorders.
Assess patient understanding of treatment proposals & gain informed consent in order to work within the legal framework for patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
To be responsible for own personal development including NQP competencies, in order to establish and maintain competence and fitness to practice as a Speech and Language Therapist.
To maintain a professional evidence based portfolio, meeting the requirements of the HCPC.

Communications

To contribute to effective communication networks for dysphagia with patients, carers, MDT, other workers and agencies across health, social care and the private sector locally and regionally.
To promote awareness of the role of Speech and Language Therapy within the hospital.
To continuously develop clinical expertise and achieve goals set for personal and professional development, with reference to RCSLT guidelines and Trust appraisal processes.
To be an active member of the in-service training programme by attendance & delivering presentations & training sessions at staff meetings, tutorials and training sessions.
To communicate effectively, plan, organise & work collaboratively with medical, nursing & therapy colleagues to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service.
To participate in the staff appraisal scheme as appraisee.
To undertake the measurement & evaluation of own & current best practice and to make recommendations for change implementation.
To comply with organisational, professional & Trust policies & procedures
To participate in all areas clinical governance including audit and participate in programmes for other areas to support peers as appropriate.
Be responsible for own personal development in order to establish and maintain competence and fitness to practice as a Speech and Language Therapist with stroke and other adult patients. To maintain a professional evidence based portfolio, meeting the requirements of the HCPC.
Contribute to the supervision of Speech and Language Therapy students on practice placement within the Trust, including written assessment.

Essential Degree in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent, or in process if student. Membership of RCSLT Full and current registration with HCPC, or in process if new graduate

Undergraduate clinical experience in adult acquired communication and swallowing disorders Case load management experience (with supervision) Understanding of the roles of other professionals relevant to client group. Experience of delivering training in communication Experience of working with patients in an acute setting either as a student, post qualification or SLT assistant Experience of delivering dysphagia therapy and observing SLTs working with dysphagia. Knowledge and Skills

Understanding/awareness of the impact of H&N cancer and its treatment on communication, swallowing, voice and quality of life.
