Job Overview

We are currently seeking a dedicated and experienced Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) to join a specialist post-16 educational setting in Harrow on a locum basis. This role involves supporting young people aged 16 to 25 with a range of Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), including Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), social communication needs, and more complex profiles including pre-verbal communication.

The setting supports approximately 20 learners across two classrooms, with a strong focus on independence, life skills, and preparation for adulthood. Some learners are working towards higher education and functional independence, while others require more specialist support with communication, emotional regulation, and social understanding.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Band 6 or Band 7 therapist looking for a flexible role where they can make a meaningful impact by shaping communication profiles and supporting staff to deliver targeted interventions.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Carry out Speech and Language Therapy assessments for identified students and develop clear communication profiles.
  • Design and implement individualised therapy programmes tailored to each learner’s needs.
  • Provide guidance and training to staff to support the delivery of communication strategies and targets.
  • Support students with a range of needs, including neurodiversity, DLD, ASC, and complex communication difficulties.
  • Contribute to the development of strategies to support emotional regulation, social communication, and independence.
  • Support learners in developing functional communication skills for daily living, including community access and work placements.
  • Work collaboratively with education staff and external partners to support successful outcomes, including workplace communication needs.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical documentation.
Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • A recognised degree in Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent).
  • HCPC registration and membership (or eligibility) with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
  • Experience working with young people or adults with a range of communication needs, including ASC and DLD.
  • Experience supporting individuals with complex or pre-verbal communication profiles.
  • Strong understanding of functional communication, independence, and life skills development.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train and support staff.
  • A proactive and flexible approach to working in an educational setting.
