Main duties of the job

The Adult Speech and Language Therapy Service in South-West Essex is excited to recruit a Speech and Language Therapist to be part of our dynamic and forward thinking service.

Our community Speech and Language Therapy team works across Brentwood, Billericay, Basildon, Wickford and Thurrock covering both general community and community inpatient settings. We are a welcoming and aspirational group of therapists with a clear vision and strong commitment to improving the lives of local people. We also place equal emphasis upon caring for each other and are proud to work within a trust that champions the health and well-being of its staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Our Adult Community Service provides assessment, therapy and management for a wide range of aetiologies including but not limited to Stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Traumatic Brain Injury, and respiratory conditions. As such, the post holder is required to demonstrate basic level assessment, management and therapy for both communication and dysphagia impairments. They will be aided to construct comprehensive therapy programmes to be completed by the therapist, SLTA or as a patient self-management programme. The post holder will work alongside a diverse range of professional colleagues from health, social and voluntary sectors to provide streamlined care and joined up services. This will require excellent organisational skills, strong communication skills and a proactive approach as a member of these wider MDTs.

As a team we value and recognise the clinical and professional skill developmental leap that occurs in your first year as a qualified therapist. To enable this, you will be provided with a clinical supervisor and receive weekly supervision across your first months. You will be supported to work through the NQP comps and build up to a full clinical caseload. You will also participate in team meetings and CPD and our annual appraisal process. There are opportunities for internal and external CPD, and we encourage the team to participate in audit, research and quality improvement work.

Our community services are provided in patient’s homes and care homes across the patch (including Brentwood, Basildon and Thurrock) and from our clinic bases. As such a car driver with valid license is essential.

The role would suit an individual who is motivated with their development, enthusiastic and flexible in their approach to work. You will need to have excellent communication and negotiation skills, be able to work as part of a team and be able to motivate patients. You will be able to use highly developed interpersonal skills to quickly establish and foster strong relationships with a range of key individuals and multidisciplinary teams.
