Job description
Job Summary

Our post holder will join a team of Consultants, Senior Residents, junior medical trainees, Specialist Nurses and other Health Professionals in one or more cancer sites, contributing to outpatient clinical care and inpatient ward care. This role is not recognised for training and is for service purposes only, but the post holder will be allocated a named clinical supervisor and can attend educational opportunities provided for existing trainees. A study leave budget is also available. The position is suitable for candidates who are keen to become a clinical or medical oncologist and wish to gain further experience while applying for future training posts.

Main duties of the job

These doctors are employed as Non-Training doctors at junior doctor level to support inpatient services alongside training posts. The post holder will have the opportunity to work alongside a site‑specific team delivering outpatient clinics and will be allocated a clinical supervisor. The balance of the post may vary between outpatient (OP) and inpatient (IP) departments according to service needs and the skills and qualifications of the post holder. RT planning clinics may be included for experience where desired.

The duties described here are provisional and will be subject to annual review, forming part of a composite job plan agreed between the post holder and the Clinical Director or a nominated deputy. Proposed weekly timetable (regular scheduled NHS activities):

  • Attendance at Multi‑Disciplinary Team meetings
  • Attendance at outpatient clinics (new patient / follow‑up clinics)
  • Involved in training CMT and GP trainees and Specialty Registrars

Person Specification
Essential
  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
  • MB BS or recognised equivalent
  • Four years full‑time postgraduate training (or part‑time equivalent) with at least two years in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed‑term specialty trainee, or equivalent experience/competencies *
  • Experience at Internal Medicine level managing patients with cancer disease and cancer‑related health problems
  • Evidence of experience in a range of acute medical specialties, including managing patients on unselected medical take
  • Commitment to team approach and multi‑disciplinary working
  • Effective communication skills
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance
  • Ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary and to seek advice from senior doctors as appropriate
  • Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
