Specialty Doctor in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care

We are seeking Specialty Doctors, who together with 94 Consultant Anaesthetists, 13 Associate Specialists, 33 existing Specialty Doctors and 42 Specialty Trainees will provide a comprehensive anaesthetic service.

These posts are based at Queen's hospital with the opportunity to rotate to Royal Derby Hospital by mutual agreement. We are able to support doctors aiming to progress via a CESR route.

The position will comprise of between 10 programmed activities on average per week and there are 3.2 additional PAs available with this post (on joining the on-call rota). These posts offer a variety of interests including, theatre work, obstetric anaesthesia, intensive care and resident on call duties. A willingness to work flexibly is essential. The Specialty Doctors are co-ordinated by a dedicated Consultant and the Trust has also appointed a Tutor to specifically support the educational and developmental needs of the Specialty Doctor group in all specialties.

Main duties of the job

Queen's Hospital Burton has a main theatre suite with 5 operating theatres and an 8 bedded recovery. Most surgical specialties (with the exception of orthopaedics) theatre lists take place here. There is adjacent elective admissions lounge where the majority of patients arrive prior to theatre. There is a specific orthopaedic theatre complex with a trauma theatre and a stand-alone (but on site) Treatment Centre, with 6 operating theatres. The majority of cases anticipated to be day cases are operated on here, including the vast majority of ophthalmic cases. In June 2020 two dedicated Orthopaedics theatres were opened adjacent to the Treatment Centre with a 28 bedded ward.

Following a £5 million investment Queens Hospital Burton now has a new fully refurbished Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The Unit has been expanded from 10 to 14 beds (funded for up to 8 Level 3 patients) that also include isolation rooms to treat and rehabilitate acutely unwell patients. The department is supported by experienced and passionate medical, clinical, and non-clinical teams.

Qualifications

  • MB BS/MB BCh or approved overseas equivalent
  • MRCP/MRCS or equivalent higher qualification
  • Life Support Qualifications (ALS/ATLS)
  • Further postgraduate qualifications relevant to the specialty

Experience

  • Minimum 4 years postgraduate experience including 2 years in Anaesthesia/ITU/Obstetric Anaesthesia. Experience of post operative pain management.
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice at time of application
  • Evidence of achievement of ST1/CT1 competencies in a relevant specialty at the time of application and likelihood of achieving ST2/CT2 competencies in a relevant specialty by the start date of the post
  • Evidence of achievement of foundation competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC Standards of Good Medical Practice; Or able to demonstrate achievement of the necessary equivalent competencies
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
  • Completed at least four years\' full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in specialty or have equivalent experience and competencies
  • Minimum 1 year NHS experience
Teaching Experience
  • Experience of & commitment to teaching undergraduates & postgraduates
  • Experience of supervising F1, F2, ST trainees
  • Specific teaching qualification
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under-graduates
  • Attended a recognised teaching training course
Audit/Research Experience
  • Experience of & commitment to clinical audit
