Job description
Overview

Two fixed term positions for a GMC registered medical practitioner in the Maternity Directorate at the John Radcliffe Hospital have arisen — one to start as soon as possible and one to begin in January 2026. The post includes general duties in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with four defined Special Interest areas to be supported: benign gynaecology operating, maternal medicine, simulation and education training, and chronic pelvic pain. Duties include labour ward, antenatal and gynaecology clinics, fetal and maternal medicine clinics, elective theatre lists, obstetrics and gynaecology on call and special interest sessions. The appointee will care for inpatients and outpatients in Obstetrics and Gynaecology under direct or indirect supervision of Consultants.

Responsibilities
  • Work in the Maternity Assessment Unit, Delivery Suite, Antenatal and Postnatal wards and Antenatal clinic, Gynaecology clinics, and theatres.
  • Carry out duties across labour ward, antenatal and gynaecology clinics, fetal and maternal medicine clinics, and elective theatre lists.
  • Participate in obstetrics and gynaecology on-call duties and attend special interest sessions.
  • Contribute to care and management of inpatients and outpatients under supervision.
  • Engage in departmental teaching, MDT training, and SPA time to develop a specialist interest.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Experience in care of pregnant women is essential; a good understanding of the relevant national guidelines is desirable.

Location and Structure

The appointee will be based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford and Horton General Hospital, Banbury. Duties in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology cover both units, including the Maternity Assessment Unit, Delivery Suite, Antenatal and Postnatal wards, Antenatal clinic, Gynaecology clinics, and theatres. There is an opportunity to undertake ATSMs, participate in departmental teaching, and SPA time in weekly sessions.

Contractual Details

This post includes 1 in 9 out of hours on-call commitment with compensatory rest and is compliant with a 1b contract. The post is full time. Induction will be arranged at the start of the post.

Departmental Context

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology provides maternity and gynaecology services to the Oxford region and handles over 7000 deliveries per year. It is a tertiary referral centre for nearby regions and is an approved training centre for subspecialties in Maternal and Fetal Medicine, Urogynaecology and Reproductive Medicine, with close links to the Nuffield Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Oxford. The Delivery Suite is covered by three tiers of specialist trainees, with senior cover during office hours by a Consultant Obstetrician. Neonatologists, obstetric anaesthetists, and other specialists are available at all times. There is a large tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and close collaboration with the High Risk Pregnancy Service.
