The SLT team at Hillingdon Hospitals are looking for an enthusiastic Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly and supportive adult in-patient service. We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Speech and Language Therapist to join our neurorehabilitation SLT team at Hillingdon Hospital. The role is primarily split between our acute Stroke Unit and Alderbourn neuro‑rehabilitation ward. There will be opportunities to gain experience on the acute wards, as well as achieving Videofluoroscopy competencies and/or FEES competencies. The post holder will work as part of the SLT team and wider MDT and will be supported and supervised by a Highly Specialist SLT as well as the Clinical Lead SLT.

You will have previous experience of the assessment and management of neurorehabilitation patients including dysphagia management and the development of communication therapy plans. Previous experience of videofluoroscopy and MDT training is desirable. You will have excellent interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills.

Main Duties

You will receive regular clinical supervision, monthly CPD sessions, peer support and evidence‑based practice sessions provided by our very supportive team. As a team we look to continually improve the service we provide; this role also offers opportunity for participating and leading on service development projects and outcome measures. Furthermore, the hospital is currently developing academic links with nearby Brunel University, which has resulted in a number of therapy colleagues participating in supported studying.

Person Specification

Essential

  • HCPC registration
  • RCSLT registration
  • Recognised degree in Speech & Language Therapy
  • Provision and evaluation of training for families, health professionals, students and others
  • Experience working within a multi‑disciplinary team
  • Knowledge of adult safeguarding, vulnerable adults, mental capacity and other relevant acts
  • Awareness of occupational health & safety and infection control principles
  • Awareness of clinical governance and its implications for SLT, including the importance of audit as a tool for service development
  • Awareness of national policies and procedures that impact on SLT practice e.g. NICE guidelines
  • Understanding of professional ethics and awareness of regulatory and professional bodies (RCSLT, HCPC) their code of practice and professional guidelines

Desirable

  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses
  • Evidence of experiential learning and development of specialist skills such as videofluoroscopy, or fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
  • Member of special interest group
  • Postgraduate experience with dysphagia within a range of caseloads
  • Postgraduate experience with assessment and management of various communication disorders
  • Experience with videofluoroscopy and/or FEES
  • Experience with tracheostomised patients
  • Supervision of junior staff members including the provision of dysphagia training
