University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Pharmacist Technician to join the aseptic service team at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. The role focuses on high-quality chemotherapy aseptic preparation and staff training within a multidisciplinary setting.

You will be registered with the GPhC and possess the accredited checking qualification. This Band 5 post offers development opportunities and a pro rata annual salary in line with NHS terms.

Qualifications

  • Recognised pharmacy technician qualification.
  • NVQ level 3 in Pharmacy Service Skills or equivalent.
  • Registration with General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Accredited checking qualification and registration with Northwest framework (equiv to NVQ level 4).

Responsibilities

  • To assist in the provision of a high quality, patient focused, aseptic service, to patients of the trust particularly regarding provision of a chemotherapy compounding service.
  • To assist the senior technicians in the day to day running of the pharmacy aseptic service, including the training of technicians, apprentices and assistants in the technical aspects of the service.
  • To help facilitate and support the efficient and cost-effective use of medicines within the aseptic unit.
  • To provide safe, timely, cost effective appropriate and high quality pharmaceutical services for patients and staff.

You will participate in the provision of a safe, efficient and cost-effective Aseptic Preparation Service for Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Training and revalidation of staff in all aseptic practices as well as assisting the managers on daily duties. You will be working together with our Senior Technician, Assistants, and other junior staff to help develop their skills in this area, as well as making sure we continue to improve our aseptic services.

Main duties of the job

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals -the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

The RLI and FGH have a range of General Hospital services, with busy Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and qualifications
  • Recognised pharmacy technician qualification
  • NVQ level 3 in Pharmacy Service Skills or equivalent

Experience
  • Relevant experience in hospital Pharmacy or other Pharmacy setting
  • Experience in dispensing medications, drugs receipt, record keeping and cold chain maintenance
  • Experience of hospital pharmacy and aseptics
  • Experience with clinical Audit and data analysis
  • Experience in specialist
Skills, ability and knowledge
  • Working knowledge of pharmacy procedures, practices and legislation including Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)
  • Good manual, accuracy and analytical dispensing skills
  • Working knowledge of training requirements for technical / support posts
  • Ability to motivate self and others and lead a team
  • Ability to talk to / communicate with patients, carers and healthcare professionals clearly
  • Good influencing and teaching skills
  • Computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft word and skills for dispensing and record keeping
  • Further computing skills e.g. presentations and spreadsheets
