• Record maintenance visits and defects in the Building Logbook.

This Specialist Technician post sits in Operational Services at the University of Surrey, within a team that combines installation and maintenance work. The role covers planned projects and reactive repairs on building systems and environmental controls across all University premises. It is pitched at a senior level, with more complex tasks, extra responsibility and multi-skilled jobs such as isolations, fault finding and minor carpentry. Candidates must keep professional accreditation current through courses and exams.

What the job involves

• Carry out planned projects and reactive work on University infrastructure and environmental control systems
• Carry out small installation works and support operational maintenance across University premises
• Maintain systems, including statutory inspection and testing, to current legislation
• Report failing plant or assets to the Helpdesk and keep plant areas in good condition
• Respond to maintenance demands across the University promptly and cost-effectively
• Ensure compliance with University health and safety and environmental systems and procedures, and help develop these policies
• Ensure equipment and materials used meet current legislative standards
• Keep up to date with legislation and developments, and pass exams to maintain professional accreditation
• Carry out multi-skilled tasks such as mechanical and electrical isolations, fault finding, minor carpentry, redecoration linked to maintenance and small works
• Complete administrative records, including work records, timesheets, stores issues, estimates and health and safety records
• Record maintenance visits and defects in the Building Logbook and report all defects immediately to the helpdesk

Skills & knowledge

• Computer literate and comfortable using computer and tablet systems
