Specialist Screening Practitioner - Bowel Cancer Screening. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who wish to develop and enhance specialised skills in gastrointestinal nursing. This is being offered as a secondment or fixed term post initially. Training & support will be provided to develop autonomous practitioner skills to support career development within GI nursing. The SSP will manage disorders of the lower GI tract arising from the bowel cancer screening programme, including assessment, education and counselling where appropriate.
Location: London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust; may be in one or more locations with weekend rotation to ensure service flexibility for the screening population.
The role involves integrating, communicating, supporting and being a role model to a wide multi-disciplinary group in a centre of excellence. The screening centre operates Monday to Friday 8am–6pm with Saturday coverage ad hoc depending on service requirements. This post is initially for 12 months with potential for a substantive post based on competencies and progression. There is access to national training and education courses to ensure competency and optimal practice as an SSP. The SSP will work closely with the Lead SSP, SSPs, endoscopy team, colorectal team, pathology, radiology and cancer services and have a clinical commitment to the bowel cancer screening centre. The post holder will contribute to the SSP/nursing contribution within the bowel cancer screening service in accordance with local and national specifications, including the FOBT and Lynch Screening Service, in one or more locations and with flexibility to serve the screening populations.

The role will involve collaborative working with a team of SSPs, current and other endoscopy units in satellite screening locations to ensure delivery of the screening service in these areas. The SSP will be supported by the Lead SSPs, Senior SSPs, Clinical Programme Manager & (non clinical) Programme Manager.
The SSP is expected to be an experienced nurse showing professional & personal development. It is essential that the post holder can work within a diverse team, provide autonomous decision making and be aware of their limitations in accordance with NMC. The role involves the ability to integrate, communicate, support and be a role model to a wide multi-disciplinary group in a centre of excellence.
The SSP clinical duties are as defined in the screening centres overall demand and capacity planning and SSPs weekly sessional commitments- (job plan).
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
