Are you a passionate, motivated children’s nurse looking to develop specialist skills in the management of childhood asthma? An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic nurse to join our dynamic Children’s Services team as a Specialist Paediatric Asthma Nurse.

This is an excellent opportunity to work within a well-established multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality, evidence-based care to children and young people with asthma across acute, community, and primary care. You\'ll play a key role in improving asthma outcomes, empowering families through education, and promoting self-management to reduce hospital admissions and emergency attendances.

As a Band 6 Specialist Nurse, you will:

  • Provide expert assessment, care planning, and review for children with asthma, both in hospital and in community clinics.
  • Deliver nurse-led asthma clinics and support early intervention and discharge planning.
  • Educate children, young people, families, and school staff on asthma management, inhaler technique, and trigger avoidance.
  • Act as a resource for clinical colleagues, offering advice and training on asthma care and current national guidelines.
  • Contribute to service development, audit, and quality improvement initiatives aimed at improving asthma outcomes and patient experience.
  • Work collaboratively with respiratory consultants, GPs, pharmacists, school nurses, and community teams to ensure continuity and coordination of care.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide specialist assessment, management, and review for children and young people with asthma in both hospital and community settings.
  • Deliver nurse-led asthma clinics and contribute to early discharge and admission avoidance pathways.
  • Educate and support children, families, and carers on asthma self-management, inhaler techniques, and trigger control.
  • Offer expert advice, education, and training to colleagues and other professionals involved in paediatric care.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, including respiratory consultants, GPs, pharmacists, school nurses, and community teams.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of clinical guidelines, protocols, and care pathways in line with national standards (BTS/SIGN, NICE).
  • Support audit, data collection, and quality improvement projects to monitor and enhance service delivery.
  • Act as a resource and advocate for children with asthma, ensuring care is safe, effective, and family-centred.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and ensure continuity of care across services.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and supervision to maintain and expand clinical competence in paediatric respiratory care.
