Are you interested in a career in the field of mental health dietetics?

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic Registered Dietitian to join our team of dietitians working within our specialist mental health services.

The post-holder will be based at Cygnet Nield House in Crewe, a 30-bed mental health hospital for women. Cygnet Nield House will be split into two distinct wards, each offering specialist mental health services. This role will support Clarion Ward.

Clarion Ward at Cygnet Nield House is a complex personality disorder service for women with a dual diagnosis of personality disorder and disordered eating. Clarion Ward focuses on the need for treatment to be collaborative with service users taking account of individual need, evidence based, driven by multi-disciplinary understanding, support and intervention and conducive to progression through the service, increased post-discharge quality of life and functioning and reduced risk of relapse.

Role responsibilities

The Dietetic input may be delivered through a combination of 1:1 sessions and group work which may address managing a range of complex presentations including nutrition support, weight management and disordered eating. The post-holder will provide a full Dietetic assessment of individuals' needs resulting in an individualised Dietetic plans, and work in close collaboration with the catering and wider multi-disciplinary team to provide specialist advice on oral and non-oral feeding regimes.

Candidates should be a Registered Dietitian, preferably with some experience of working in a mental health setting or with individuals with disordered eating. A working knowledge of behaviour change and motivational interviewing would be desirable. We have a robust clinical supervision structure and you would have opportunities to receive formal and informal training. You will receive regular clinical and managerial supervision as defined by the BDA supervision framework, with a strong emphasis placed on Continued Professional Development.

Candidate Profile
We are looking for a Specialist / Highly Specialist Dietitian with:
  • A degree / postgraduate diploma (or equivalent) in Dietetics, registration with HCPC (Health Care Professions Council) and membership of the BDA (British Dietetic Association)
  • Experience in the field of mental health or disordered eating, evidenced by sound clinical knowledge Experience of working in inpatient settings would also be beneficial
  • Evidence of being a strong team player with a genuine desire to help others
  • Excellent communication / time management skills

If you have not worked in this setting before, this role offers many opportunities to learn about dietetics practice in mental health or perhaps could offer an opportunity to pursue a clinical interest in the assessment and management of disordered eating - we will tailor the support you receive accordingly.

The post holder will also have the opportunity to participate in policy development and review, audit, research activities, pathway development, staff and student training at both a local and national level.

Will there be other dietitians?

This post is part of a small but growing national dietetics team at Cygnet. Members of the team provide services to children and young people, eating disorders, learning disabilities, brain injury and mental health inpatient services. Everyone has a dedicated onsite line manager for day-to-day support and then an additional tier of professional and clinical support from our Director of Speech and Language Therapy and Dietetics. We also have a team of 50 Speech and Language Therapists who work closely with our Dietitians for dysphagia management.
