Job description

We are recruiting for this permanent opportunity for a Band 7 Occupational Therapist to join our Neurosciences team, with a primary focus on neurosurgery, extending into neurology too. This is an excellent role for an experienced therapist, passionate about delivering high-quality care to patients with complex neurological conditions.

Opportunities on the neuro rotation are also available including Major Trauma and Neuro outliers, Acute and Hyper-Acute Stroke, Neuro-rehabilitation and Neurology/Neurosurgery.

About the Role

This specialist post is based at Charing Cross Hospital, working predominantly within neurosurgery, including acute inpatient care and post-operative rehabilitation. You will also provide outreach cover for ITU patients with neurological needs and contribute to neuro‑oncology outpatient clinics, supporting patients through their treatment journey.

  • To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including management of patients in your care.
  • To provide comprehensive and specialist occupational therapy assessment and diagnosis for adults with a range of highly complex presentations, by utilising advanced neurological assessment, clinical reasoning, evidence‑based knowledge, investigative and analytical skills.
  • To use advanced communication, implementing a range of verbal and non‑verbal skills, with patients and their / carers to motivate, maximise rehabilitation potential and to ensure an understanding of their condition.
  • To communicate the complex, condition‑related clinical findings gained from assessment to patients’ carers, families and members of the multi‑disciplinary team and other professions.
  • Have responsibility for the day‑to‑day management of the in‑patient neurosciences, stroke and neuro‑trauma. Plan and organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to patient management and use of time.
  • To take a lead in the development of the neurosciences, stroke and neuro‑trauma and develop objectives and projects for the team,
  • Within the Therapy Service, to contribute to overall organisational thinking, planning, evaluation and continuous improvement through leadership and membership of various groups. To make recommendations for service development.
  • To develop and use performance outcome measures and audit to monitor the clinical effectiveness of the team.
