Job Summary

The Special Care and Community Dental Service is seeking a compassionate and motivated dentist to work four days per week. Our team provides comprehensive dental care to patients in Carlisle & Eden. The role requires a passion for Special Care Dentistry, excellent communication skills, and the ability to care for some of the most vulnerable people in society.

Main Duties of the Job

The position is full‑time (37.5 hours per week, with possible variance) based at the Carlisle Dental Centre. The role involves:

  • Providing comprehensive dental care to patients in Carlisle & Eden.
  • Delivering inhalation and intravenous sedation.
  • Providing care under general anaesthesia at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.
  • Traveling to other clinic locations in Carlisle & Eden.

Qualifications – Essential
  • Bachelor in Dental Surgery or equivalent
  • Evidence of continued professional and managerial development
  • NHSE Performer List number with no conditions or restrictions
  • Not subject to an open or on‑going Performer Investigation
  • Registration with the General Dental Council (Dentist) with no conditions or restrictions
  • Registration on the GDC Specialist List relevant to the post
Qualifications – Desirable
  • Dental post‑graduate qualification relating to sedation
  • Management qualification or appropriate training
  • Postgraduate educational qualification
Experience – Essential
  • Experience in pain and anxiety control, including conscious sedation
  • Provision of comprehensive dental care under general anaesthesia
  • Experience of clinical audit, evaluation and learning cycle
  • Planning and managing care for patients with complex medical co‑morbidities
  • Experience working collaboratively with other health‑care teams (hospital staff, health and social care, GDS)
Experience – Desirable
  • Experience providing healthcare within salaried and specialised services
  • Teaching, training, supervising and mentoring junior staff, dental core trainees and undergraduate students
  • Domiciliary experience in Special Care Dentistry
  • Membership of relevant professional bodies
  • Use of patient management techniques such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
