Job description

The Department of Surgery at UHCW NHS Trust has grown over the last few years, promoting sub‑specialisation, in keeping with Department of Health and Royal Colleges guidelines. As a result, the traditionally aligned sub‑specialities of Upper GI / Hepatobiliary-pancreato‑biliary (HPB) have now separated into Oesophago‑gastric and HPB, each has developed a specialty team distinct to its requirements.

There is an exciting opportunity to join the Upper GI team as a Specialist Doctor. The post holder will occupy a key organisational role in the Upper GI team, which also comprises 5 middle grades, 2 CT grades, 3 FY1s and 3 ACP/SCPs. The post holder will be expected to support with the provision of inpatient and outpatient care for patients under the care of the Upper GI team, including supporting independent theatre lists and clinic activity.

In addition to this, the post holder will contribute to the teaching of medical students and resident medical and non‑medical staff.

Responsibilities
  • Attend MDT meetings and co‑ordinate care and list planning for oesophageal and gastric cancer patients.
  • Perform audit of overall activity of the unit and supervise collection and presentation of mandatory morbidity and mortality data.
  • Accountable for improving and complying with infection control practices and independently operate STU to support the 'Hot Gall bladder' service and help reduce waiting lists for routine day‑case surgery, such as inguinal hernia.
  • Perform Consultant General Surgery on‑call as required to support the needs of the department, which would be subject to remuneration if outside working hours.
