About the Role

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) describes algorithms that can produce new content and is increasingly used as a support mechanism for content‑based creations. Use of AI is monitored and any application that includes AI must be declared.

The post holder will be part of a team providing a Clinical Biochemistry service to the Trust, rotating through all sections of the Department and practising a wide range of automated and manual analytical procedures to produce high‑quality test results. The post holder will also supervise and train medical laboratory assistants and other technical and scientific staff under the direction of the section leader.

Key responsibilities also include participation in an out‑of‑hours roster, including lone working at night and weekends. Out‑of‑hours shifts are included within the contracted 37.5 hours per working week and will involve an increased allocation of night shifts.

Responsibilities
  • Follow protocols for performing a wide range of laboratory procedures.
  • Participate in the 24/7 provision of clinical Biochemistry out‑of‑hours service, working night and weekend shifts.
  • Organise personal workload in response to the urgency and volume of requests.
  • Inspect analytical quality control results and authorise the reporting of only those results that satisfy established criteria.
  • Recognise abnormal results and ensure they are reported without delay, and that appropriate follow‑on tests are performed.
  • Maintain equipment and workspace in a clean and functional condition.
  • Ensure that analytical procedures and equipment not conforming to quality specifications are brought to the attention of senior staff.
  • Assist the supervision of Associate Practitioners and Medical Laboratory Assistants.
  • Assist in training all grades of staff.
  • Establish, maintain and increase knowledge, skills and competency, including maintaining a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) portfolio and providing evidence of learning.
Qualifications
  • Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and possess UK‑based laboratory experience.
  • Willingness to work out‑of‑hours roster with lone working at night and weekends.
  • Ability to speak fluent English at an appropriate standard (Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016) as assessed at interview.
