Job description
Specialist Biomedical Scientist Chemical Pathology

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Biomedical Scientist in Clinical Biochemistry/Immunology. The service supports all hospital wards and departments, as well as GPs, clinics, and private hospitals across central and south Buckinghamshire and beyond. The central laboratory is based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, with a satellite laboratory at Wycombe Hospital. Staff are expected to work at either site as required by the service.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Clinical Biochemistry, you will be responsible for processing laboratory tests on patient samples across one of four sub-sections of the laboratory on a rotational basis. Applicants must hold HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist and possess strong knowledge in Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology. Ideally, you will also have experience in personnel management. The department is well-equipped with modern, standardised analysers, including Architect, Tosoh, Osmo 1 (Advanced Instruments), Chlorochek, HM-JACK, UVikon in Biochemistry, and Helena V8 in Immunology.

You will be expected to work cross-discipline following appropriate training and will be required to participate in the out-of-hours shift rota. Flexibility is essential, as you may be required to work at both Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Wycombe Hospital in line with service needs.

Job responsibilities
  • To deputise for the Lead BMS during periods of absence and contribute to the overall management of the Haematology and Blood Transfusion departments.
  • To supervise and support daily operations within the Routine Haematology Department, ensuring smooth workflow and high performance.
  • To oversee training and education, including technical instruction and supervision of project work for basic and post-basic qualification trainees.
  • To maintain and monitor laboratory equipment, including calibration, quality control, and the introduction of new technologies and systems.
  • To authorise and review test results, initiate further investigations where necessary, and escalate clinically significant findings to medical staff.
  • To support staff development and quality management, including conducting appraisals, assisting with PDPs, and contributing to the Blood Sciences Quality Management System.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • BSc in Biomedical Science or an equivalent qualification
  • Registered Biomedical Scientist with the HCPC.
  • Experience in Immunology and Biochemistry
  • Must hold an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry or have equivalent Band 6-level experience in a relevant field.
  • Evidence of Continual Professional Development (CPD).
