Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Blood Sciences (RJAH)

We are looking for an enthusiastic, HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, with relevant post‑registration experience to join the small and friendly team in the Blood Sciences department at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital (RJAH).

The successful applicant will assist with the provision of a diagnostic service as part of a 37.5 hour working week – mostly Monday to Friday days with occasional weekend working.

Main duties of the job
  • Assist in the provision of a diagnostic service.
  • Understand, organise and perform competently a range of laboratory procedures, either singly or as part of a team, that equate to the training and qualifications of an HCPC registered BMS.
  • Attain proficiency in Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion essential to support a 24‑hour, 7‑day Blood Science service.
  • Participate in the out‑of‑hour service as a lone worker or team leader.
  • Deputise for Senior BMS staff in their absence and take lead responsibility for a specialist section of the department as required.
About us

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital (SaTH) Pathology Services are accredited to UKAS standards. Blood Sciences laboratory services are provided on site by SaTH at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital. The laboratory is a small, multidisciplinary site focusing mainly on pre‑operative, surgical and inpatient work.

The Haematology and Coagulation section is equipped with Sysmex analysers. Automated BioRad equipment is used in the Blood Transfusion Department and Biochemistry uses Roche analysers. The department is an approved IBMS/HCPC training laboratory and continuous professional development is actively encouraged.

The hospital is located close to the market town of Oswestry in a beautiful rural setting. Good road transport links are nearby and there is on‑site staff parking available.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • BSc(Hons) in Biomedical Sciences (IBMS approved) or equivalent
  • Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Membership of the Institute of Biomedical Science or equivalent professional body.
  • Multidisciplinary Specialist Diploma equivalent qualification e.g. BBTS Specialist Certificate.
  • IOSH
Experience
  • Substantial practical experience of Biomedical procedures in a relevant discipline; gained through working in an NHS environment
  • Experience of Out of Hours working
  • Experience of working unsupervised within scope of practice
  • Experience of analyser/equipment/IQC troubleshooting
  • Multi‑disciplinary working experience.
  • Experience of supervising junior staff and students.
  • Familiar with instrumentation used in the department, or similar.
  • Experience of using Pathology LIMS and a Quality management software.
Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft software in particular Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems and Quality Assurance
  • Knowledge of Laboratory accreditation and compliance.
  • Knowledge of Pathology IT systems
