Job description

The Eastern Pathology Alliance is formed from three Pathology Laboratories based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH), the James Paget University Hospital (JPUH) and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn (QEH).

We have an exciting opportunity for an HCPC registered Biomedical scientist to work full time in the Analytical and Specialist Chemistry section of the Clinical Biochemistry department.

The Laboratory at NNUH provides a large range of Blood Sciences services comprising Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Transfusion, Immunology and Toxicology.

The laboratory at QEH provides 24/7 laboratory services in Haematology, Transfusion and biochemistry primarily for the Inpatient and outpatient demands for the Trust.

Interview date: to be confirmed.

The Analytical and Specialist Chemistry section of the NNUH Clinical Biochemistry department provides a wide range of analytical services over two sub-section disciplines.

The toxicology discipline provides a wide range of analytical services, including urine drugs of abuse, immunosuppressant drug monitoring, trace element analysis, urine metanephrines & 5-HIAA, and 25-OH vitamin D. These analyses require the use, and maintenance by the BMS staff of a variety of different methods and analysers including; tandem mass spectrometry, ICP-MS, HPLC, immunoassay and QToF-MS.

The endocrinology sub-section also provides a wide range of analytical services, utilising several immunoassay analysers from various manufacturers (Siemens, Roche, and Perkin–Elmer). The test repertoire includes routine and esoteric endocrinology (e.g. testosterone, oestradiol, DHEAS, ACTH, etc.), tumour markers, CSF oligoclonal bands, and is the site of the Supra-regional Assay and Advice Service for Calcium and Bone Metabolism Markers. The section provides the 1st trimester maternal serum screening service for Down’s, Edwards’, and Patau’s syndromes for Norfolk.

The successful candidate will already have significant clinical biochemistry experience, and some experience of specialist analytical chemistry methods, and/or the assays run in a combined toxicology, and endocrinology/proteins section would be advantageous.
