Main duties of the job
Candidates must hold either the DMU or PgCert/Dip/MSc in Medical Ultrasound, and HCPC (or equivalent professional body) registration.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver high‑standard ultrasound examinations in line with service quality standards.
- Conduct non‑obstetric ultrasound examinations, mainly gynaecological and general abdominal, with growing musculoskeletal and vascular services.
- Ensure examinations are carried out quickly, minimizing patient delay.
- Assist teammates and maintain service provision.
- Perform and report quality control tests and report any equipment malfunctions.
- Maintain professional behaviour and uphold the reputation of the service.
- Stay updated with developments in ultrasound, attending courses and seminars as required.
- Support the training and development of junior staff.
Clinical responsibilities
- Assume full clinical responsibility for all aspects of practice.
- Provide high‑standard clinical care and support colleagues.
- Carry out complex investigations using advanced skills and standardised protocols.
- Obtain valid informed consent and formulate individualised investigations.
- Implement evidence‑based techniques and manage clinical risk proactively.
- Prepare accurate written reports and communicate findings promptly.
- Participate in audit programmes and continuous improvement activities.
- Promote patient rights and maintain confidentiality.
Premises, equipment and supplies
- Maintain a clean, safe work area and secure all equipment.
- Ensure equipment is operating and regularly serviced.
- Have knowledge of computer connectivity in a scanning and reporting environment.
- Setup and dismantle portable ultrasound machines and clinic as required.
- Ensure adequate stocks and supplies for day‑to‑day work.
Education and Qualifications
Working conditions
Physically demanding, may involve odd or long hours, sitting and use of office equipment. The environment is busy and demanding, requiring excellent organisational and stress‑management skills.
Person specification
- Essential – Diploma/BC of Radiographers or BSc in Radiography (or equivalent), HCPC registration, Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound (DMU or equivalent).
- Desirable – At least 5 years experience in ultrasound; static and portable ultrasound equipment experience.
- Experience Essential – Broad, general medical imaging background; portfolio of CPD; evidence of collaborative working; proven knowledge of HCPC code of conduct.
