This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a high-profile public inquiry, supporting sensitive and complex work for a public sector client. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced legal professionals on matters of significant public interest, gaining exposure to a broad range of legal, evidential and procedural issues.

About the Team

The team advises and represents clients across the public and private sectors in connection with public inquiries, independent investigations and confidential reviews. Its work includes supporting inquiry processes, representing individuals and organisations participating in formal investigations, and advising clients on complex and sensitive matters. The team also conducts independent reviews to examine organisational practices, investigate specific incidents and identify potential areas of concern.

The team has experience across a broad range of sectors and subject areas, including public safety, healthcare, child protection, institutional accountability, government decision-making and regulatory oversight.

Its work has involved supporting major public inquiries into matters of national significance, representing individuals and organisations participating in statutory and non-statutory inquiries, assisting witnesses with the preparation of evidence, and managing substantial disclosure exercises. The team also undertakes investigations requiring detailed evidential analysis, independent assessment and careful consideration of legal, regulatory and reputational risks.

The work is varied and often unpredictable, offering the opportunity to contribute to complex matters that can have significant public, organisational and legal implications.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will contribute to a wide range of inquiry and investigation work, including:

  • Supporting statutory and non-statutory public inquiries in an advisory and legal capacity.
  • Advising and representing individuals and organisations participating in public inquiries and independent investigations.
  • Assisting with internal investigations, independent reviews and other sensitive client matters.
  • Liaising with witnesses and relevant stakeholders, conducting interviews and preparing witness statements.
  • Reviewing, analysing and assessing documentary evidence using specialist document management and review platforms.
  • Supporting large-scale disclosure projects and document review exercises.
  • Identifying and redacting confidential, sensitive or legally privileged information.
  • Managing and analysing substantial volumes of evidence, maintaining accurate records and preparing reports on findings.
  • Assisting with hearing preparation and attending hearings where required.
  • Supporting communications and media-related matters, including consideration of reputational risks.
  • Advising on inquiry procedures, evidence gathering, disclosure obligations, document management and procedural fairness.
  • Assisting with legal issues relating to privilege, freedom of information, data protection and judicial review.
Skills and Experience

We are looking for a qualified solicitor with strong analytical skills, sound judgment and the ability to manage complex and sensitive matters in a demanding environment.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Qualification as a solicitor in England and Wales, with 1+ post-qualification experience.
  • Experience of working on public inquiries, either supporting an inquiry legal team or representing an individual or organisation participating in an inquiry.
  • Experience gained in private practice, government, a regulatory body or the public sector.
  • Previous involvement in large-scale disclosure projects or document review exercises.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex information and identify key issues.
  • Excellent judgment and attention to detail, particularly when handling confidential or sensitive material.
  • Good commercial awareness and financial acumen, with an understanding of proportionate and cost-effective legal service delivery.
  • The ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a wider team.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build effective relationships with clients, witnesses, colleagues and Counsel.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise competing demands.
  • The resilience and flexibility to work under pressure, meet challenging deadlines and maintain consistently high standards.
  • A willingness to travel and work at client premises or alternative locations when required.
