Qualifications

Overview

This role is primarily based out of Birmingham Snowhill.

Hybrid working: 3 days in the office, 2 days wherever.

Platforms and infrastructure we are responsible for are nationally critical with over 10 million customers, enabling them to connect to their Broadband, Wi-Fi, and various hybrid products and services.

The service data our platforms generate supports activities such as cyber defence, capacity and network management, Quality of Service analysis and more. We are transforming our platforms to make the best use of the latest cloud technologies, putting automation and data at the heart of everything we do.

The Data and Authentication Team brings together Design, Development, Test and Technical Services, all under one roof. Collectively we work in an Agile/Scrum model, positioning us to exploit the best of SRE/DevOps practices.

Primary function of this role is to provide software solution engineering technical leadership capability in the evolution and ongoing management of the platforms, working closely with stakeholders, architects and other teams.

What you'll be doing

Innovative Problem Solving: Resolve complex and strategic issues using your technical knowledge, developing bespoke solutions, especially in untested technologies or products with large-scale impact.

Code Development: Write, test, and maintain code, addressing complex aspects independently, and communicate effectively with engineering professionals.

Technology Trends: Champion emerging trends and changes in software engineering, continuously sharing knowledge with the team.

Technical Roadmap: Support and contribute to our ambitious technical roadmap, aligning with business needs, engineering goals, and partner requirements.

Engineering Culture: Foster an engineering culture that promotes innovation, creativity, predictability, and reliability in product development.

Agile Mindset: Promote efficiency and delivery focus by practicing and contributing to our agile way of working.

Skills you'll need

Advanced Technical Problem Solving:

  • Proven track record of resolving complex and strategic issues using advanced technical knowledge.
  • Experience in developing technically complex solutions, especially in untested technologies or products with a large-scale impact.

Software Solution Development:

  • Strong software solution development skills, including writing, testing, and maintaining a complex codebase.
  • Ability to refine and rewrite code independently, with effective communication to engineering professionals and colleagues involved in the project.

Complex Problem Solving and Troubleshooting:

  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex and escalated aspects of a project, including coding, debugging, testing, and troubleshooting.

Technical Vision and Innovation:

  • Active involvement in implementing the technical vision and pursuing innovations in new technologies, platforms, and applications.

Automation and Tooling:

  • Proficiency in evaluating, implementing, and maintaining high-quality tools and complex automation processes to support continuous delivery and developer productivity.

Sharing and Collaboration:

  • Strong collaboration skills, including working closely with development teams and designers to meet the requirements of the business, engineering team, and partner teams.
  • Dedication to championing and continuously developing knowledge on emerging trends and changes in software engineering.
Experience you'll have

MANDATORY

  • At least 2 years of experience in Software Solution Development
  • Strong understanding of fundamentals for Linux, Security, Virtualisation, Networks, Version control, Object Oriented Programming
  • Experience in Full-Stack software development
  • Understanding of CICD concepts and experience with automated pipelines
  • Experience of working with Cloud technologies and providers
  • Basic knowledge of network stack in cloud including VPC, Security groups and ACLs, topology and subnets, VPN
  • Working with virtual instances on cloud VMs (EC2, image to instance)
  • Cost awareness, management, optimization and control
  • Experience of working with Infrastructure as Code tools and technologies
  • Worked collaboratively with teams to release software and infrastructure to Production in a regular and controlled manner, ensuring it is monitored and helping the team plan for issues that may arise from changes to the software including business processes

PREFERRED

  • Experience with Ruby, Python or Java
  • Experience in building, maintaining and orchestrating docker containers with docker-compose; Kubernetes is a plus
  • Experience with AWS or GCP
  • Any experience with OpenStack ecosystem
  • Experience of working with ELK Stack and Kafka
  • Any experience with popular monitoring tools like Monit, Telegraf, Prometheus, etc.
  • Database skills: relational DBs (SQL, Oracle) is a plus
