Aegon UK in Peterborough is seeking an experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead multiple engineering teams in a hybrid role. You will drive standards, ensure delivery of high-quality software and guide technical decisions to meet customer and business needs.

The role requires strong leadership, governance, and collaboration across engineering, architecture and delivery teams, with emphasis on agile practices and cloud-enabled delivery.

Qualifications

• Software Engineering or Architecture background with .NET/C# focus.
• Hands-on development, architecture and automation experience, though role isn’t hands-on.
• Strong influencing skills to lead cross-functional teams without direct line management.
• Understanding of the engineering lifecycle, branching, code reviews and release governance.

Salary: A competitive salary from £52,720 – £79,080 depending on the experience you can bring

We have an opportunity for an experienced Engineering Manager to join our team in Peterborough. In this role, you’ll drive engineering standards and delivery across established teams, ensuring they build and run high-quality software that meets customer and business needs. You’ll shape how information flows through our teams, improve processes and guide technical decisions to enable better outcomes.

You will manage demand, oversee development and support architectural changes – while ensuring teams operate with autonomy and within governance frameworks. This role often spans multiple teams, requiring strong leadership and influencing skills to align delivery across a complex environment.

Key Responsibilities include:

• Bringing together cross-functional teams – aligning engineers, analysts, architects, and other specialists to deliver high-quality solutions. Your leadership will ensure collaboration, technical excellence and a shared focus on outcomes.
• Leading technical planning, estimation and delivery across multiple initiatives.
• Owning service quality – ensuring performance, resilience, and tech debt reduction.
• Managing defects and issues to maintain system stability and reliability.
• Overseeing work intake, backlog prioritisation and delivery flow.
• Monitoring development costs and drive technical efficiency (e.g. cloud spend).
• Ensuring governance and performance tracking through metrics and controls.
• Enabling high-performing teams by embedding agile, CI/CD, DevSecOps, and SRE practices.
• Fostering collaboration, continuous improvement, and a strong engineering culture.

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

• A technical background in Software Engineering or Architecture, focusing on .NET and C#.
• Evidenced knowledge and experience of hands‑on development, architecture and automation – although this role isn’t hands‑on.
• Strong influencing skills to lead cross-functional teams without direct line management.
• Strong understanding of the engineering lifecycle – branching, code reviews, release governance, and change control.
• Experience building software across different platforms and technologies.
• Experience with build automation, deployment techniques, and production practices like observability and monitoring.
• Deep technical knowledge and ability to lead meaningful conversations across engineering and architecture.
• Familiarity with modern engineering practices including Agile, cloud platforms, automation, CI/CD, and tooling like Bitbucket or GitHub.
• Experience building strong relationships across senior stakeholders, product and delivery teams.
• You thrive in ambiguity, bringing a mindset of continuous improvement and adaptability.

• We’re serious about your future and our enhanced pension scheme is now in place. We ask you to contribute 3% of your salary to your pension and we’ll put in 9%. If you decide to contribute more, we’ll match it up to a combined total of 20% of your salary (that’s 7% from you and 13% from us).

• 36 days leave per year (including bank holidays, pro-rated for part-time).
