Job summary

Magellan is seeking a software engineer to design, develop, and test the Customer Information System (CIS) used in UK rail. You will join the Beeston-based CIS DevOps team of ~15, delivering front-end, backend, and cloud-hosted applications that drive CIS displays and public address announcements at thousands of stations.

Collaboration with Product Owner and Tech leads will be essential. The role emphasizes modern web development with Angular, strong UI skills, and the ability to balance

Qualifications

  • Experience with modern web development frameworks (Angular or equivalent).
  • Strong UI development experience (HTML, CSS).
  • Experience in the UK rail industry is a plus.
  • Ability to deliver high-quality code with robust testing practices.
  • Willingness to visit customer sites and adapt to project needs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, code and test CIS software following industry practices and local standards.
  • Break down designs into work packages for the team.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to developers and review their work.
  • Coach and mentor the development team in processes and skills.
  • Help reduce CIS technical debt, particularly in AWS-based components.
  • Occasionally attend Beeston office as required.

The opportunity

You will be responsible for designing, developing and testing of Customer Information System (CIS) software including front-end, backend database and cloud-hosted applications. Situated in our Beeston office, the CIS Team is a DevOps team made up of around 15 hardworking and enthusiastic people who share a passion for delivering real value to, and driving change in, the UK rail industry. We are the UK’s largest and most established provider of Customer Information Control systems that drive the CIS displays and automated Public address announcements at around 2,000 UK railway stations. Magellan provide these systems to Train Operating Companies and Network Rail.

Day-to-day responsibilities
  • Developing, coding and testing in line with industry best practice and local standards
  • Breaking down designs into work packages for the wider development team
  • Providing expert technical guidance and support to other developers
  • Reviewing work completed by the development team
  • Coaching and mentoring the development team in how they work and the skills they use
  • Helping to reduce CIS technical debt, particularly Amazon Web Services
  • Occasional attendance at the Beeston Office as and when required
Who are we looking for

You will work closely with the Product Owner, Technical Architect, Technical Lead and Support team to deliver software development projects to customers and assist in diagnosing/fixing faults.

  • Past experience of working in the Rail Industry.
  • You are an expert in modern Web Development Frameworks (e.g. Angular, or equivalent), relevant design principles, and best practices (including unit testing).
  • You've got substantial knowledge in UI development (HTML, CSS, etc.).
  • Ability to make pragmatic technical decisions balancing innovation with practicality and maintainability.
  • Motivation and passion for building user-centric applications that support customers in achieving their business goals.
  • Strong focus on delivering quality code supported by robust testing practices.
  • You master new skills and technologies quickly.
  • Willingness to visit customers’ premises for face to face meetings/workshops and occasional visits to UK railway stations to assist the installation company or maintainer
