Job description

Naimuri Portsmouth, England, United Kingdom

Software Engineer

We can offer you the chance to help make the UK a safer place through innovation, working in partnership with government, defence, and law enforcement organisations on some of the most challenging data and technology problems out there.

We strongly encourage candidates of all different backgrounds and identities to apply. We are committed to building an inclusive, safe and supportive environment that allows everyone to do their best work. We are happy to support any accessibility or neurodiversity requirements that you may need during the recruitment process.

About us: We’ve been around for about ten years and grown from being a little‑known tech start‑up to creating our own community at the heart of the thriving and diverse tech and digital ecosystem of Greater Manchester. As part of our future journey we’re looking to create footprints in other areas of the UK, and in this instance around the Portsmouth and Salisbury Plains area.

Our business is focused on four cornerstones, which shape and underpin the way in which we go about work and treat each other: Wellbeing, Empowerment, Perpetual Edge and Delivery.

People and culture are at the heart of Naimuri so that collectively, we can realise our mission of “making the UK a safer place to be.”

About the role

We are seeking a talented and passionate Full Stack Software Engineer to join a software delivery team that is already supporting, or about to start supporting, projects initially within the Defence sector, with opportunities to work in other sectors in the future.

What You’ll Do
  • Support the development of application functionality and features.
  • Write clean, well‑documented, and testable code, adhering to best practices and coding standards.
  • Implement and maintain unit, integration, and end‑to‑end tests to ensure application quality and reliability.
  • Participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback and ensuring code quality.
  • Stay up‑to‑date with the latest technologies, frameworks, and best practices.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of our development processes and tools.
We’re looking for someone with
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proven professional experience as a Software Engineer or similar role (3+ years).
  • Previous demonstrable experience in delivery through Agile methodologies.
  • Experience with SQL, React, NextJS, NodeJS and full‑stack development.
  • Proficiency with version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Awareness of software development best practices, including testing, debugging, and performance optimisation.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
It would be advantageous if you also had
  • Prior experience working in the Defence domain.
  • Awareness of Secure by Design (SbD) principles (e.g., JSP 440/604).
  • Familiarity with AWS.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG).
  • Experience with Express, Kafka, Redis, Kubernetes, Docker/Podman, Elastic stack, graph databases, e2e testing using Cypress or Playwright, CI/CD pipelines.
Location

Whilst our Head Office is based in Salford Quays, Manchester, with satellite offices in London and Cheltenham, the location for this role is in, or around the area of Portsmouth. The role would be hybrid working where you can work from home for part of your working week with time on site being based on the needs of your assigned delivery and agreed Ways of Working for your team. Onsite location would be in Portsmouth primarily, and would normally be a maximum of one or two days per week based on specific delivery demand but you would be welcome to spend more days in the office if you preferred. There would be occasional travel to Manchester estimated to be no more than once or twice a year.

About you

We’re looking for someone with strong experience in developing software solutions and a proven ability to deliver at pace. You should have some opinions on what good code looks like (front end or back end), how to select appropriate technologies for a solution, and how to spot smells in the code.

Knowledge of developing on the cloud is preferred, although not essential. Solid fundamentals with software development, systems integration, problem solving, and teamwork pave the way.

Pay and benefits

Naimuri pays competitively within the industry based on your role’s base location rates. The salary for this position is dependent upon your experience. We assess seniority relative to the team at Naimuri during the interviewing process.

A full time working week is 37.5 hours and you have flexibility over when you give that time. We also offer part‑time working which can be discussed during the recruitment process.

Our core hours are 10:00am - 3:00pm and our office hours are between 7:30 and 18:00 Monday to Friday.

Benefits include
  • Flexible/Hybrid working options
  • A company performance related bonus

  • AXA group 1 medical cover
  • Personal training budget
