Job summary

Digital Waffle in London is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to own core features and shape an autonomous AI platform used by service businesses to manage customer interactions and operations.

You will lead the design of scalable systems, mentor engineers, and collaborate closely with customers to translate requirements into product features and reliable cloud-based solutions.

Qualifications

• 5 to 10 years' experience across full stack or backend-focused software engineering.
• Strong commercial experience with Python and TypeScript—ideally AsyncOpenAI.
• Experience building and scaling production AI products or integrating AI/ML capabilities into software.
• Strong backend engineering skills with experience designing scalable services and APIs.
• Experience working with cloud infrastructure and modern distributed systems.
• Understanding of event-driven architecture and asynchronous systems.
• Experience with Kubernetes, serverless infrastructure or modern containerised environments.
• Strong product mindset with the ability to work directly with customers and understand their operational challenges.
• High ownership mentality with the ability to thrive in a fast-moving startup environment.
• Comfortable working onsite in London five days per week.

• Work directly with customers to scope technical solutions and translate operational problems into product features.
• Build scalable, event-driven backend systems and integrations with third-party platforms.
• Develop and improve AI-powered workflows, including voice and conversational AI capabilities.
• Make pragmatic engineering decisions, knowing when to move quickly with an MVP and when to invest in scalable foundations.
• Contribute to cloud architecture, infrastructure and deployment patterns across the platform.
• Set high standards around testing, documentation, security, reliability and engineering quality.
• Help mentor other engineers and influence technical direction as the team grows.
