Job summary

Hodge in Cardiff is seeking a Software Engineer to join the BAU team and develop new features. You will resolve live issues, contribute to the software delivery landscape, and work with IT and Change teams to improve practices.

You should have commercial software development experience, be proficient in Java (v8+), and know Spring and Hibernate with relational databases. You will participate in Agile ceremonies and maintain documentation and tests.

Qualifications

• Experience in a commercial software development environment.
• Proficiency with Java (v8+).
• Knowledge of relational databases and frameworks such as Hibernate/Spring.
• Familiarity with SDLC tooling and development practices.

Responsibilities

• Understand core architectural patterns used by Hodge.
• Maintain documentation for project work.
• Engage with external suppliers to align interfaces with standards.
• Understand business processes supported by software.
• Contribute development work to resolve live BAU issues.
• Enhance existing systems and create new services.
• Ensure unit tests and quality measures are applied.
• Maintain current and future development documentation.
• Collaborate with Test team on testing requirements.
• Review peers' work and code.
• Investigate data fixes to support BAU activity.
• Apply software quality controls in development work.
• Keep up-to-date with current technologies and best practices.
• Engage with external parties and the tech community to share knowledge.

The role of Software Engineer is to resolve live issues as part of the BAU team and develop new features through software development activity, contributing to the technical landscape of Hodge. Engaging with the wider IT and Change Teams to contribute to continual improvement of software delivery and development practices.

Essential Experience:

• Previous experience in commercial software development environment.
• Experience developing using Java (v8+).
• Knowledge and experience using relational databases, Hibernate and Spring or similar frameworks.
• Knowledge of supporting tools throughout the Software Development lifecycle.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Understand core architectural patterns and frameworks used by Hodge.
• Understand and maintain all relevant documentation on project work undertaken.
• Engage with external suppliers to ensure system interfaces align with agreed principles and standards.
• Understand key business processes that software supports.
• Understand the wider economic environment in which Hodge operates.
• Development work to resolve live issues from Hodge application.
• Development work to enhance existing and creation of new software systems and services.
• Ensure appropriate quality measures (e.g. unit test coverage) are adhered to and improved.
• Ensure appropriate documentation is maintained to support current and future development activity.
• Work with Test team to ensure agreed testing requirements are implemented.
• Review work and code of other team members.
• Investigate and develop data fixes to support BAU activity
• Development work to resolve issues and enhance existing software systems and services
• Apply key software quality controls to development work undertaken
• Maintain a knowledge of current technologies and best practise to identify improvements.
• Engage with external parties and tech community to share and improve knowledge.
