Job Purpose

To deliver high-quality, child-centred social work across fostering, adoption, kinship care, after and unpaid carers’ services. You will assess, plan, and review care arrangements, ensuring that every child and young person achieves safety, stability, and the best possible outcomes in line with statutory requirements and Orkney Islands Council policies.

What You Will Do
Fostering & Adoption
  • Undertake Form F and PAR assessments for prospective foster carers and adopters.
  • Present cases to the Fostering and Adoption Panels.
  • Provide supervision, support, and training to foster carers and adopters.
  • Contribute to permanency planning to ensure timely and stable placements.
Kinship Care
  • Assess and support kinship carers, conducting regular reviews and advocacy.
  • Work collaboratively with children’s social workers to promote the best outcomes for children in kinship care.
After Care (Continuing Care & Throughcare)
  • Support young people transitioning from care to independence under the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act.
  • Complete pathway plans and coordinate with education, housing, and employability services for smooth transitions.
Unpaid Carers
  • Identify and assess the needs of unpaid carers, providing access to Carer Support Plans.
  • Strengthen local support networks in partnership with third-sector organisations.
  • Represent the service in Child Protection Conferences, LAC Reviews, and Permanence Panels.
  • Build strong partnerships across health, education, and voluntary sectors.
Professional Accountability
  • Maintain detailed, confidential case records in line with professional standards.
  • Participate in supervision, team meetings, and continuous professional development.
