Role: Social Worker - Child Protection Team
Department: Children's Social Care, Stockton-on-Tees Council
Location: Stockton-on-Tees

Purpose of Role
  • To safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people at risk of significant harm.
  • To undertake statutory child protection investigations and assessments in line with legislation and council procedures.
  • To ensure timely, effective interventions that protect children and support families.
Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out child protection enquiries under Section 47 of the Children Act 1989.
  • Undertake assessments of children and families, identifying risks and protective factors.
  • Develop and implement child protection plans in partnership with families and multi‑agency professionals.
  • Prepare clear, evidence‑based reports for child protection conferences, court proceedings, and statutory reviews.
  • Maintain accurate case records and ensure compliance with council policies and safeguarding standards.
  • Work collaboratively with police, health, education, and voluntary sector partners to safeguard children.
Essential Skills & Experience
  • Qualified Social Worker with registration to Social Work England.
  • Strong knowledge of child protection legislation, statutory guidance, and safeguarding procedures.
  • Experience of working in child protection or statutory social work settings.
  • Ability to manage complex caseloads and make sound professional judgments under pressure.
  • Excellent communication, report writing, and relationship‑building skills.
Desirable
  • Experience of court work and giving evidence in child protection proceedings.
  • Knowledge of Stockton‑on‑Tees local services and family support pathways.
