Job summary

Shetland Islands Council is looking for compassionate Social Care Workers (Entry/Main) to support adults with learning disabilities or autism in their homes and in day activities. You will be part of a responsive team, delivering person-centered care with dignity and respect, aligned to the SSSC values.

This role is based at Newcraigielea, Lerwick, Shetland. PVG clearance and driving may be required; relocation is not offered. We offer a generous benefits package and development opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support to individuals in a variety of settings.
  • Help individuals maintain independence and dignity through care and support.
  • Assist with daily living activities, training, social activities and meaningful activities as required.
  • Work as part of a team to deliver high-quality care while minimising risk of harm.
  • Travel to support service users across Shetland when needed and comply with PVG and SSSC requirements.

Social Care Worker (Entry/Main) - Adult Services

Adult Services – What We Do

The people who use our services (individuals) have additional support needs associated with learning disability or autism and require support to continue to live independently in their own homes, to attend Day Support and meaningful activity or have short break respite. For further details on our individual services, please see service descriptors attached below.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • You will be responsible for providing direct support to individuals in a variety of settings.
  • You will play a key role ensuring that individuals receive high standards of care and support to help retain their potential level of independence and dignity throughout their lives.
  • You will support people with varying abilities and complex needs, enabling them to achieve their goals, identified priorities and personal outcomes.
  • You will work as part of a team to provide the highest quality of care. This may include intimate personal care, developing daily living skills, training, social activities and other meaningful activity in accordance with their identified needs and wishes, whilst supporting individuals, as far as possible, to avoid danger and harm.
  • You must evidence that you can demonstrate the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) core values of;

Social Care Workers shall provide care in a variety of settings including within the community. Therefore the worker will, in the majority of cases, be required to travel to undertake their duties. An ability to drive with a full driving licence is therefore highly desirable and may be essential depending on the demands of the service. The travel requirements of each post will be made clear through the recruitment & selection process.

  • Rate of pay shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £1.5523 per hour
  • Permanent Part Time post for 24.5 Hours per Week, 52.18 weeks per year
  • Preferred candidates will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update prior to a formal offer of employment being made
  • The successful candidate will have to complete registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) when they begin in post
  • A relocation package does not apply to this post
  • We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland
  • You must have the ability to travel throughout Shetland at short notice and where public transport is limited
  • We are happy to talk flexible working
