Job summary

John Lewis Partnership is opening an Avonmouth regional distribution centre and seeks a qualified Skilled Maintenance Technician to own the maintenance plan and uphold high reliability. The role includes an 6:00am–2:00pm / 2:00pm–10:00pm two‑week rota, and a regular 24/7 call‑out to manage critical situations.

The position is permanent with Evening/Night premiums and benefits such as pension contributions, generous holiday entitlement, staff discounts, and on-site parking.

Qualifications

• Experience in a distribution or warehouse maintenance environment.
• Time-served Electrician with relevant accreditation, or HVAC qualification.
• Knowledge of site safety regulations with ability to manage audits and statutory records.
• Knowledge of CDM regulations and CAFM systems; proficient in Google Workspace.
• Understanding of procurement lifecycle and budget controls.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Are you a qualified Skilled Maintenance Technician? We will soon be opening our new Waitrose regional distribution centre at our Avonmouth Site and are looking for a skilled maintenance professional ready to take ownership, drive high standards, and play a pivotal role in ensuring our site infrastructure and operational reliability remain second to none. In addition to your contractual pay, any time worked between 18:00 - 22:00 will attract an Evening Premium at a rate of £3.25 per hour, and any time worked between 22:00 - 06:00 will attract a Night Premium at a rate of £4.25 per hour. This will also apply to existing Partners who have enrolled onto Enhanced Hours Premium arrangements.

Contract type - This is a permanent position

Location - Avonmouth Regional Distribution Site

Hours/Shift Pattern - 6:00am – 2:00pm / 2:00pm – 10:00pm two week rota, Monday-Friday

There will be a regular call-out rota required due to the site being operational 24/7/365, with a requirement to be available by phone and able to reach the site within an hour to manage critical situations.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Supervisor in executing the maintenance business plan, ensuring site-wide assets are maintained to the highest standards through meticulous planning and delivery.
• Foster a culture of high performance, setting clear benchmarks for delivery, ownership, Health & Safety, and customer service across all areas of responsibility.
• Guarantee strict adherence to legal, safety, and assurance requirements.
• Conduct regular compliance audits of both internal team and third-party contractor works to proactively mitigate operational risk.
• Assist in budgetary control for revenue and service procurement, actively evaluating the cost-benefit of in-house versus contractor delivery with strict financial restraint.
• Oversee the timely delivery of all Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive tasks in line with SFG20 standards, ensuring accurate documentation of all remedial actions.
• Build and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders, specialist contractors, and on-site third parties.
• Maintain full awareness of site-wide maintenance projects to ensure safe delivery while actively supporting the Partnership’s carbon reduction and energy efficiency initiatives.

Essential skills/experience you’ll need

• Demonstrated experience in a distribution or warehouse maintenance environment.
• Time-served Electrician with relevant industry accreditation, or an equivalent professional qualification in HVAC systems.
• Comprehensive knowledge of site safety regulations (H&S legislation, Water Hygiene/Legionella control, LOLER, PUWER, Fire Safety) with a proven ability to manage audits and statutory records.
• Knowledge of CDM regulations and maintenance CAFM systems for tracking work orders, alongside advanced proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides).
• Proven understanding of the procurement lifecycle, including sourcing parts, managing supplier relationships, and adhering to budgetary controls.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to build effective networks both internally and with external service providers.

Desirable skills/experience you may have

• Hands-on experience using CAFM systems (specifically Opuz) to manage PPM and reactive work orders.
• IOSH or NEBOSH qualification.
• SEMA qualified, IPAF qualified, or a current CSCS card holder.
