Job Summary
You will be responsible for managing the Sixth Form Study Area and ensuring a productive working ethos for Key Stage 5 students, supporting their academic progress and well‑being. The role is a support partnership with the Head of Sixth Form and Tutors, providing confidential management, administrative support, and a welcoming atmosphere for students and parents.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the sixth form study area
- Supervise study conditions during lesson times, ensuring a calm, productive atmosphere and a study ethos
- Ensure policies are followed, maintaining an environment that supports effective study habits
- Maintain register and track compulsory “study students” referred by staff
- Track and assess students' academic performance, providing regular feedback and progress reports to students, parents, and staff
- Register and review attendance at timetabled supervised study sessions
- Communicate with parents regarding concerns and progress, logging all communications on the school MIS (Arbor)
- Provide study skills support for students in 1‑to‑1 or group mentoring sessions
- Identify students at risk of underachievement, poor attendance, low engagement or self‑esteem and develop targeted intervention plans
- Help students develop effective study techniques and time‑management skills
- Draw up action plans with students, including short‑ and long‑term targets
- Work closely with teachers, staff, and external partners to provide comprehensive support for students
- Coordinate with colleagues to integrate academic support with classroom learning and address any learning barriers
- Develop strong, trusting relationships with students to understand their needs and provide effective support
- Act as a mentor and role model, offering guidance and encouragement to help students navigate their academic journey at KS5
- Maintain KS5 resources and develop and manage the KS5 Learning Hub
- Support with timetabling changes and create appropriate form groups specific to tutor specialisms
- Track weekly attendance and record any pupils on Academic Report
- Assist the Careers Manager and Head of Sixth Form where required, for example with the UCAS process
- Support the work of the school attendance officer and wider sixth‑form team when early support has not reduced poor attendance
- Work within the Academy framework regarding Health and Safety
- Promote equal opportunities and the Trust/Academy ethos
- Promote the school’s commitment to the continued professional development of all staff
- Assume responsibility for safeguarding and report any concerns in accordance with the Trust’s Safeguarding Policy
- Undertake any duties reasonably required by the Executive Principal or Leadership Team
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Degree or other similar qualification
- GCSE English and Maths, Grade C or above
- Experience of working with young people (paid or voluntary)
- Experience working as a learning mentor/tutor or equivalent
- Experience working as part of a team
- Ability to use IT effectively to support record‑keeping and correspondence
- Experience of working on a project with accountable outcomes
- Tenacity and flexibility, willing to try different approaches with students whose needs may differ
- Experience of working with Post‑16 students
- Excellent communication skills, oral and written, with the ability to adapt for different audiences
- Experience working in a school or similar educational institution
- Ability to present detailed written reports in a clear, professional style
- Effective behaviour‑management skills and restorative approaches
- Ability to build effective relationships with students and motivate disaffected learners
- Knowledge of outside agencies available to support the school
- Ability to collate, analyse and present data
- Working knowledge of Level 1, 2 and 3 courses available at KS5
- Ability to plan, organise and prioritise
- Ability to initiate and manage change
- Interpersonal and problem‑solving skills
- Creativity and ability to think creatively and solve problems
