Job summary

IO Associates is seeking an experienced Site Manager for Gloucester to lead Solar PV, BESS, HV substations and grid connection projects on a 12-month contract. The role focuses on safe delivery, programme management and stakeholder coordination at utility scale.

The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years in renewable energy construction, strong leadership, and proven ability to manage multiple subcontractors across civil, electrical and mechanical disciplines.

Qualifications

• SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) required.
• CSCS Black Card (Management Level) required.
• First Aid at Work certification required.
• Full UK Driving Licence required.

Responsibilities

• Lead site safety culture and ensure compliance with HSE policies and procedures.
• Manage day-to-day site activities for Solar PV, BESS, substation, and grid connection works.
• Coordinate civil, mechanical, electrical, and commissioning subcontractors.
• Drive progress against programme milestones and implement mitigations for delays.
• Chair daily and weekly site coordination meetings.
• Oversee installation activities including enabling works, earthworks, drainage, piling, mounting structures, solar modules, DC cabling, inverter stations and earthing systems.

Site Manager – Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Substation & Grid Connection

Our client, a growing operater in the energy construction and ICP sector are looking for aSite Manager to lead a Solar PV, BESS and Substation projects

Job Purpose

As Site Manager, you will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and successful delivery of utility-scale Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) construction projects, including associated HV substations and grid connection works. The role requires overall site leadership, management of subcontractors, programme delivery, quality assurance, health and safety compliance, stakeholder management, and coordination of commissioning activities through to energisation and project handover.

You will ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards while maintaining compliance with applicable regulations, client requirements, and company procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Health, Safety & Environmental Management

• Lead site safety culture and ensure compliance with all HSE policies and procedures.
• Conduct site inductions, toolbox talks, safety briefings, and daily coordination meetings.
• Ensure all construction activities comply with CDM Regulations and relevant UK legislation.
• Review and approve Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).

Site Leadership & Project Delivery

• Manage all day-to-day site activities for Solar PV, BESS, substation, and grid connection works.
• Coordinate civil, mechanical, electrical, and commissioning subcontractors.
• Drive project progress against programme milestones and identify mitigation measures for delays.
• Chair daily and weekly site coordination meetings.

• Oversee installation of:
  • Site enabling works
  • Earthworks and drainage
  • Piling and mounting structures
  • Solar module installation
  • DC cabling systems
  • Inverter stations and transformer skids
  • Earthing and lightning protection systems

Essential Qualifications & Experience

Qualifications

• SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme)
• CSCS Black Card (Management Level)
• First Aid at Work
• Full UK Driving Licence

Experience

• Minimum 5 years’ experience managing utility-scale renewable energy construction projects.
• Proven experience delivering Solar PV projects exceeding 10MW.
• Experience managing BESS construction projects.
• Experience working on HV substations and grid connection projects.
• Strong understanding of civil, electrical, and mechanical construction disciplines.
• Experience coordinating multiple subcontractors and interfaces.
• Familiarity with DNO, ICP, and National Grid requirements.

Desirable Qualifications

• IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH Certificate
• Temporary Works Coordinator
• HV Awareness Certification
• AP/SAP authorisation experience
• Prince2 or Project Management qualification
• ECS or relevant electrical qualification
• CDM Regulations knowledge and implementation experience
