Job description

Rubicon Consulting is currently recruiting for a Site Manager (M\&E) on an 18 Month Contract based in Scottish Highlands.

Role Summary

Our client is a major contractor delivering high voltage transmission infrastructure in the north of Scotland. This role is on a new-build HV substation, with associated works at an existing substation, as part of a major grid connection project.

You’ll run the electrical and M&E side of the site, working alongside the civils team and the specialist HV equipment installers, and take your packages through to energisation. It’s a hands-on role on a remote, exposed coastal site, so strong safety leadership and practical planning around weather and logistics matter as much as the technical side.

Responsibilities
  • Manage day-to-day delivery of the electrical and M&E packages, including work in the switchgear and control buildings and interfaces with the existing substation.
  • Oversee installation of building services and auxiliary systems, covering LVAC, lighting and small power, HVAC, fire detection and suppression, batteries and chargers, and earthing and lightning protection.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, the civils team and HV equipment installers so work is sequenced properly and interfaces are closed out.
  • Manage temporary works on your packages in line with BS 5975, including the temporary works register, design briefs, design checks and permits to load and dismantle. Typical items include crane and working platforms, excavation support and propping.
  • Plan heavy equipment deliveries and lifts with the lifting team, allowing for weather windows.
  • Lead health and safety on site, including RAMS review, briefings and inspections, and make sure work complies with CDM and with the network owner's safety rules and permit systems wherever it interfaces with live equipment.
  • Control quality through inspection and test plans, snagging, test records and handover documentation, and support testing, commissioning and energisation.
  • Produce lookahead programmes, daily diaries and progress reports, and raise risks and delays early.
  • Represent the site at progress meetings with the client's team and manage local constraints such as traffic management and working hours.
Requirements
  • A recognised electrical qualification: HNC, HND or degree in electrical engineering, or a completed electrical apprenticeship (NVQ/SVQ Level 3 with AM2 or equivalent) followed by progression into site management.
  • Site management experience on HV substations, converter stations or comparable electrical infrastructure projects.
  • Valid SMSTS.
  • CITB Temporary Works Coordinator (TWCTC) or Temporary Works Supervisor (TWSTS) certificate, backed by hands‑on experience managing temporary works on site.
  • Valid CSCS card suitable for a site management role, or a recognised partner scheme card such as ECS or SJIB.
  • Full UK driving licence and your own transport, as the site is remote with no practical public transport.
  • Living within commuting distance of Thurso, or experienced in working away on a rotation.
  • Right to work in the UK and able to pass pre‑engagement and site access checks.
  • 132kV to 400kV transmission substation experience, particularly GIS.
  • Experience working inside live substations under a network operator's safety rules, ideally with a current or previous Competent Person (or equivalent) authorisation.
  • Temporary works experience on transformer or reactor lifts, crane platforms and excavations near live services.
  • Testing, commissioning and energisation handover experience.
  • Experience on remote or island projects.
  • Experience working under contaminated land or environmental monitoring controls.
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate and First Aid at Work.
