Job summary

Careys is seeking a Site Engineer for West Cumbria to lead setting-out, check levels and tolerances, and support senior engineers on major civil projects across the UK. You will coordinate drawings, deliver site information, and ensure buildability and compliance on site.

The role requires strong surveying skills, 4+ years in civil engineering, and an HNC or higher in Civil/Structural Engineering. A hands-on, collaborative approach and attention to quality are essential.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years’ experience on major civil engineering projects.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid civil engineering knowledge to interpret drawings and specs.
  • Experience with AutoCAD/BricsCAD.
  • HNC or higher in Civil or Structural Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out accurate setting out using surveying equipment.
  • Check levels, dimensions and tolerances to ensure work is completed correctly.
  • Support the Senior Engineer in resolving technical queries and RFIs.
  • Review drawings, raise issues early, and help ensure work is buildable and compliant.
  • Work closely with Site Managers and Supervisors to plan and sequence works.
  • Provide clear construction information to the workforce, including sketches and mark-ups.
  • Monitor progress and provide input into short-term planning.
  • Maintain accurate as-built records and support digital deliverables.
  • Help prepare Inspection & Test Plans and carry out quality checks on site.
  • Identify issues early and support the resolution of non-conformances.
  • Carry out material checks and ensure correct testing and sampling procedures.
  • Assist with take-offs and scheduling of key materials such as drainage, reinforcement and waterbars.
  • Complete temporary works inspections and support simple temporary works designs.
  • Supervise Apprentice and Graduate Engineers, offering day-to-day guidance.
  • Work closely with subcontractors and suppliers to support safe and efficient delivery.
